Scene Description Karuna fidgets with her necklace as Amitabha gets physically distant and unresponsive. The hope of marriage that buoyed her is lost, Amitabha has given it no encouragement. "You are thinking of marriage, aren't you?", he asks. It is clear to her that he is not. Embarrassed, she denies it trying to act composed. he asks for more time but it his not hers to give. Karuna feels betrayed that he should have anything to rethink about this matter at all. His prevarication is tantamount to rejection. Her corrosive response as she leaves, is that he does not need time but something else - implying that he is spineless. (3/17)
