Ka Purush Maha Purush (Kapurush O Mahapurush), 1965, India, Bengali
Scene Description Amitabha, a film writer is on a visit to Siliguri in North Bengal when his car breaks down. Bimal Gupta, a local tea-planter extends his hospitality and takes him home on the Saturday evening. Amitabha discovers that Bimal's wife is Karuna, now Mrs Karuna Gupta, his erstwhile lover. This sets off a series of flashbacks in which Amitabha remembers their relationship. The key to understand their past is in the first flashback sequence- when they were still students. Karuna comes with the news that her uncle has accepted a transfer to Patna, he will take her along and soon marry her off. Despite her playful teasing, she is distressed, for this spells the end of their togetherness unless they do something to make it permanent. Karuna, it seems, is more willing to take whatever necessary step it is that could keep their relationship intact. Amitabha fails to engage and grapple with the quick change in situations.(2/17)
