Film TitleHirak Rajar Deshe (The Kingdom of Diamonds), 1980, India, Bengali
Scene DescriptionTypical to every fascist regime which curbs freedom to learn, the King orders the education minister to close the school. Education is dangerous, it provokes thoughts and ideas; it encourages people to question the order of things. The education minister and his retinue of guards head into the pathshala where the village teacher Udayan Pandit was imparting a lesson from the Hitopadesha. The minister instructs the students to repeat - 'there is no end to knowledge, so there is no use of seeking it' and 'the learned die of hunger', after which he declares a permanent holiday for them. Udayan with a fallen but resolute face asks his students if they remember his teachings, and promises them that the school will reopen. At his house, a major censorship drive is underway, injuring the old father the soldiers snatch and burn all his books. (8/35)
