Film Title

Hirak Rajar Deshe (The Kingdom of Diamonds), 1980, India, Bengali

Scene Description Singer Charandas is arrested for singing and presented in court. He appeals against the unnaturalness of the law against singing, as we bear in mind the power of songs in the previous film. The singer presents his song, its lyrics asserting the strangeness of the world where good lives in squalor and the wicked in opulent palaces; farmers who harvest the crop have no grain to eat and the workers who mine for diamonds are penniless. The King of course feels exposed and asks his guards to tie the man up and drop him in a ditch. (7/35)
