Film TitleHirak Rajar Deshe (The Kingdom of Diamonds), 1980, India, Bengali
Scene DescriptionFazal Mian, a farmer appears in court to appeal for concession in revenue collection conducted for the upcoming ceremony. He is a small farmer who must feed his family and stave off the Mahajan or usurer at the same time. The additional tax would cause his children to starve. The cruel King maintains an adamant indifference to the plight of the man. The court poet composes a poem on the King's insistence, that it is better to starve than not pay taxes, ending with a verse iterating the divinity of the King. Ray shows the propaganda purpose of literature through this. A protesting Fazal is dragged to the brain-washing chamber by guards. (6/35)
