Film Title

Hirak Rajar Deshe (The Kingdom of Diamonds), 1980, India, Bengali

Scene Description Hirak Raja is a satirical representation of totalitarian rulers of state. Despite the universalism of its message, it is notable that the film was released after Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi lifted the Emergency, which was a long period of suspension of democratic rights and unleashing organized state violence on certain sections of citizens. The King orders for any unpleasant sight of poverty and bleakness to be wiped out of existence to create a false illusion of a prosperous state.(4/45)
