Introduction

Nauker (1979) Directed by Ismail Memon, it starred Jaya Bachchan, Mehmood, and Sanjeev Kumar in leading roles. Although remembered primarily for Jaya Bachchan's acclaimed portrayal of the servant Geeta, the film's journey to the screen was as remarkable as its eventual success.

When Nauker was finally completed in 1979 after years of production delays, distributors were initially reluctant to acquire it. Industry observers reportedly believed that Jaya Bachchan—by then a married woman and mother of two who had largely withdrawn from acting—would no longer command significant box-office appeal. Contrary to these expectations, the film emerged as a sleeper hit and earned Bachchan the Filmfare Award for Best Actress. The achievement was particularly noteworthy given that she had effectively retired from cinema by the time the film was released.

The narrative centres on Amar (Sanjeev Kumar), a wealthy bachelor pressured by his friends to marry. Determined to test the sincerity of prospective brides, Amar exchanges identities with his loyal servant, Dayal (Mehmood), before visiting the home of a wealthy family with two daughters. Mistaking Dayal for the affluent suitor, the family's ambitious stepmother lavishes attention upon him, while the real Amar is relegated to household duties in the kitchen. There he encounters Geeta (Jaya Bachchan), an orphaned and mistreated maidservant. Unaware of Amar's true identity, Geeta falls in love with him despite believing him to be a poor servant. Following a series of comic misunderstandings and mistaken identities, Amar ultimately reveals the truth and marries Geeta.

The film's production began in 1973 but was plagued by financial difficulties and further setbacks following the untimely death of director Ismail Memon. During this challenging period, Sanjeev Kumar reportedly declined remuneration for his role in order to ease the financial burden on the director's family and help ensure the film's completion.

Nauker also highlighted the remarkable versatility of the on-screen partnership between Sanjeev Kumar and Jaya Bachchan. Within a span of only a few years, Kumar portrayed Bachchan's romantic partner in Koshish (1972), her father in Parichay (1972), and her father-in-law in Sholay (1975), demonstrating an extraordinary range of screen relationships.

The film's soundtrack, composed by R. D. Burman with lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri, contributed significantly to its appeal. Memorable songs included Pallu Latke, sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle; Ankhiyon Mein Chhote Chhote Sapne Sajaike, rendered by Lata Mangeshkar; the qawwali-inspired Dekhi Hazaron Mehfilen, performed by Asha Bhosle and Mohammed Rafi; and the poignant Aaya Na Karo Gudiya Mere Paas, sung by Asha Bhosle.

Bachchan's performance in Nauker earned her a third Filmfare Award for Best Actress, following her earlier wins for Abhimaan (1973) and Kora Kagaz (1974). The award, however, generated some controversy. Critics and sections of the public questioned the decision, while some commentators suggested that the recognition may have been influenced by a desire to honour the actress as she stepped away from active participation in the film industry.
