Naseem (1995): featured artwork

Introduction

Naseem (The Morning Breeze, 1995) Directed by Saeed Akhtar Mirza, the film is one of the most poignant works of Indian parallel cinema. The film features an accomplished ensemble cast including legendary Urdu poet Kaifi Azmi, Mayuri Kango, Seema Kelkar, Surekha Sikri, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, and Kay Kay Menon.

Set between June and December 1992, Naseem unfolds against the fraught backdrop of events leading up to the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh. At its heart is the tender relationship between Naseem, a 15-year-old schoolgirl from a middle-class Muslim family in Bombay, and her ailing grandfather. As television news brings increasingly grim reports of escalating Hindu–Muslim tensions into their living room, the grandfather recounts stories of a gentler, more harmonious past in pre-Independence Agra. These memories stand in stark contrast to the present, as communal unrest spills onto the streets of Bombay. Naseem begins to observe subtle yet unsettling shifts in her school and neighbourhood, while her grandfather watches helplessly as the city fractures along communal lines. His death on 6 December 1992 tragically coincides with the news of the mosque's destruction, underscoring the film's profound sense of loss.

Mayuri Kango, who played the titular role, completed her schooling at Saint Francis De Sales School in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and later studied at Deogiri College. The daughter of a noted stage actress, she was drawn to performance from an early age. In December 2003, she married Aditya Dhillon, an NRI, and the couple welcomed a son in 2011. Kango subsequently relocated to New York, where she earned an MBA in marketing and finance from the Zicklin School of Business at Baruch College. Transitioning from cinema to corporate leadership, she went on to become Managing Director at Performics, a leading digital media agency within the Publicis Group. Since 2019, she has served as India Industry Head – Agency Business at Google India, where she leads industry and agency partnerships.

Upon its release, Naseem was widely acclaimed as a sensitive and deeply affecting film. Critics praised its delicate portrayal of childhood innocence amid communal violence, its restrained yet powerful storytelling, and Kaifi Azmi's unforgettable performance. While some viewed its social commentary as overt, the film was largely lauded for its moral seriousness and emotional depth. Naseem earned the National Film Awards for Best Direction and Best Screenplay for Saeed Akhtar Mirza, cementing its status as a landmark work in Indian cinema.
