Introduction

Naag Panchami (1972) Directed and produced by Babubhai Mistri, a celebrated figure in Indian mythological cinema, is a visual treat especially for costume enthusiasts. The film dazzles with its lavish, glimmering outfits, featuring stunning fabrics and intricately designed accessories. The bodice styles alone, particularly those worn by the Snake Goddess and her serpentine sidekick, are perfectly suited to their mystical, dangerous personas.

The film features Prithviraj Kapoor in a prominent role, supported by a stellar ensemble including Jayshree Gadkar, Ashish Kumar, Manher Desai, Vatsala Deshmukh, Sudharshan Dhir, Uma Dutt, Satyendra Kapoor, and Shashikala, among others.

The narrative centers around Mansa, the Snake Goddess, who discovers that her divine father is none other than Lord Shiva. Longing for human worship, she targets the devout Maharaj Chandradhar. When he refuses to acknowledge her, she curses him, killing his children and allowing him to have only one more son, Lakshmendra. Tragedy unfolds in classic mythological fashion as Chandradhar continues to resist her worship, prompting Mansa to kill his son once more.

This sets the stage for the film's emotional core: Behula, Lakshmendra's widow, who embarks on a harrowing spiritual journey to the four sacred Dhams in an attempt to bring her husband back to life. Along the way, Mansa blinds Behula and drives her to madness, ensuring that Chandradhar never returns to her alive.

The film's music, composed by Ravi with lyrics by Indeever, features some of the era's most iconic playback singers: Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, and Kishore Kumar. A standout track, "Main Nadiya Ki Dhara", sung as a duet by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar, became particularly popular. The song's central metaphor "Main nadiya ki dhara, bahe ja rahi hoon" ("I am the stream of a river, flowing onward") evokes themes of surrender, fate, and perseverance. It mirrors Behula's emotional state, capturing her pain, blindness, and unwavering devotion as she traverses sacred landscapes in her quest to restore life and hope.
