Introduction
Manthan (1976) – The Churning was Released in 1976 under the English title The Churning, it was a landmark film directed by Shyam Benegal. It draws inspiration from the groundbreaking milk cooperative movement spearheaded by Verghese Kurien, with a screenplay co-written by Kurien and acclaimed playwright Vijay Tendulkar. Set against the backdrop of India's White Revolution, the film explores themes of empowerment, rural development, and collective action.
What makes Manthan particularly remarkable is its origin—it was India's first crowdfunded film. Over 500,000 farmers, each contributing Rs. 2, funded the production, symbolising the strength of grassroots movements and the power of community ownership. These same farmers later flocked to cinemas in truckloads to watch their film, contributing to its commercial success.
The story follows Dr. Rao, a young veterinary surgeon who arrives in a village with the vision of establishing a dairy cooperative. His efforts catalysed a transformation, mirroring the real-life establishment of the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) in 1973 and the creation of a nationwide milk grid that revolutionised dairy production in India.
Manthan won the 1977 National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi, a recognition shared by Shyam Benegal, and Best Screenplay for Vijay Tendulkar. It was also India's official submission to the 1976 Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film.
The film's title song, Mero Gaam Katha Parey, sung by Preeti Sagar, won her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Playback Singer. Composed by Vanraj Bhatia, the song later gained iconic status as the soundtrack for Amul's television commercials.
In 2024, Manthan was digitally restored by the Film Heritage Foundation, led by Shivendra Singh Dungarpur. The restored version premiered in the Cannes Classics section of the 77th Cannes Film Festival. The screening was attended by Naseeruddin Shah, his wife Ratna Pathak Shah, director Shyam Benegal, and Prateik Babbar, son of the late Smita Patil, one of the film's lead actors.

मंथन (1976) सन् 1976 में दि चर्निंग अंग्रेज़ी शीर्षक के साथ रिलीज़ हुई इस फ़िल्म के निर्देशक श्याम बेनेगल थे। यह कई लिहाज से एक मील का पत्थर फ़िल्म बनी। श्याम बेनेगल को इसे बनाने की प्रेरणा वर्गीज़ कुरियन के नेतृत्व में गुजरात में शुरू हुए क्रांतिकारी दुग्ध सहकारी आन्दोलन से मिली। इस फ़िक्न की पटकथा भी खुद कुरियन ने विख्यात नाटककार विजय तेंडुलकर के साथ मिलकर लिखी थी। भारत में सत्तर के दशक की शुरुआत में हुई 'श्वेत क्रांति' की पृष्ठभूमि पर आधारित यह फ़िल्म किसान सशक्तिकरण, ग्रामीण विकास और सामूहिक पहलकदमियों से हासिल जीत जैसे विषयों को अपनी कथा का केंद्र बनाती है।
मंथन की सबसे उल्लेखनीय बात इसके निर्माण की प्रक्रिया थी। इसे भारत की पहली 'क्राउडफंडेड फ़िल्म' कहा जा सकता है। गुजरात के पाँच लाख से अधिक किसानों में से हर एक ने दो रुपये का योगदान देकर इसके निर्माण के लिए धन जुटाया था। इस तरह सहकारी आन्दोलन पर बनी यह फ़िल्म खुद भी ज़मीनी आन्दोलनों की ताक़त और सामुदायिक स्वामित्व की शक्ति का प्रतीक बन गई। यही किसान बाद में ट्रकों में भरकर उनके खुद के पैसे से निर्मित इस फ़िल्म को देखने सिनेमाघरों में पहुँचे और इसकी व्यावसायिक सफलता में भागीदार बने।

सन् 2024 में मंथन का डिजिटल रीस्टोर प्रिंट 'फ़िल्म हैरिटेज फ़ाउंडेशन' संस्था द्वारा तैयार किया गया जिसके पीछे संस्थान के प्रमुख शिवेंद्र सिंह डूंगरपुर की बड़ी भूमिका रही। इस दोबारा तैयार हुए संस्करण को 77वें 'कान फ़िल्म महोत्सव' के 'कान क्लासिक्स' नामक खंड में प्रदर्शित किया गया। इस विशेष स्क्रीनिंग में फ़िल्म के अभिनेता नसीरुद्दीन शाह, उनकी पत्नी रत्ना पाठक शाह, निर्देशक श्याम बेनेगल और फ़िल्म की प्रमुख अभिनेत्री स्मिता पाटिल (अब दिवंगत) के पुत्र प्रतीक बब्बर भी शामिल हुए।
