Introduction

Love and Murder (1966), directed by Raja Paranjpe and starring Prithviraj Kapoor, Ramesh Deo, and Jaymala Adarsh, is a taut thriller that was remarkably ahead of its time. The film weaves a gripping tale of deception, danger, and double-crosses.
At the centre is Geeta (Jaymala), who becomes entangled in a deadly web of crime. Arrested under suspicion of murder, she finds herself with no one to trust except Ranjit, a man who is ultimately revealed to be part of the criminal gang. Despite his affiliation, Ranjit delivers crucial evidence proving Geeta's innocence, ultimately saving her from conviction.
The plot thickens with a bank robbery gone awry: the loot is hidden at the thief's sister's home before he is mysteriously murdered. Unwittingly, his sister is drawn into a secluded resort, where the rest of the gang lies in wait—and where a string of murders unfolds.
The film features some striking moments for its era: a seductive belly dance, a suspicious janitor serving as a red herring, and a dramatic swan dive through a window. Adding to its allure is the inclusion of Love and Marriage by Frank Sinatra, an unexpected yet memorable choice.
Though little is known about its box office performance, the soundtrack, composed by O.P. Nayyar left a lasting impression. Mohammed Rafi lent his voice to Dekhnewale Dekh Karishma Yaron Ka and Tere Gesuon Ka Saaya. Asha Bhosle's enchanting vocals can be heard in Jaan-O-Dil Dono Hai Hazir, Mere Dil Meri Jaan Tu Kah De, Sajan Mere Dil Mein Tere, and Yeh Jeevan Jitni Bar Mile, songs that still resonate today.

लव एंड मर्डर (1966) के निर्देशक राजा परांजपे थे। इस फ़िल्म में पृथ्वीराज कपूर, रमेश देव तथा जयमाला आदर्श प्रमुख भूमिकाएँ निभा रहे थे। यह फ़िल्म एक सधी हुई थ्रिलर थी जो उस दौर से आगे की फ़िल्म मानी जाती है। इसकी कहानी में छल, खतरे और धोखे को गूँथकर एक रोमांचक कथा बुनी गई है।
फ़िल्म की कहानी के केंद्र में गीता (जयमाला) है जो अपराध के घातक जाल में फँस जाती है। हत्या के संदेह में गिरफ़्तार हुई गीता को ऐसा महसूस होता है कि उसके पास भरोसा करने के लिए कोई नहीं है। वो रंजीत पर भरोसा करती है, लेकिन आखिर में वो भी उसी अपराधी गिरोह का हिस्सा निकलता है। फिर भी किसी तरह रंजीत गीता की बेगुनाही साबित करने वाला अहम सबूत पेश करता है और उसे सज़ा से बचा लेता है।
कहानी में रहस्य और गहराता है जब एक बैंक डकैती असफल हो जाती है। चोर अपने माल को अपनी बहन के घर छिपाता है लेकिन जल्द ही रहस्यमय ढंग से उसकी मौत हो जाती है। इस सबसे अंजान उसकी बहन को एक सुनसान रिसॉर्ट में बुलाया जाता है जहाँ बाकी गिरोह के लोग उसका इंतजार कर रहे होते हैं। यहीं से लगातार हत्या पर हत्या की शृंखला शुरू होती है।
इस फ़िल्म में अपने समय के लिहाज़ से कई चौंकाने वाले दृश्य थे। एक मनमोहक बेली नृत्य, शक़ पैदा करने वाला चौकीदार जो दर्शकों को गुमराह करता है और खिड़की से लगाई गई नाटकीय छलांग। इस फ़िल्म की एक और ख़ासियत यह भी थी कि इसमें फ्रैंक सिनात्रा का प्रसिद्ध गीत “लव एंड मैरिज” भी शामिल किया गया था जो औचक होते हुए भी यादगार बन गया।
हालाँकि इस फ़िल्म के व्यावसायिक प्रदर्शन के बारे में ज़्यादा जानकारी उपलब्ध नहीं है लेकिन फ़िल्म के लिए तैायर ओ. पी. नैयर का संगीत बेहद प्रभावशाली साबित हुआ। मोहम्मद रफ़ी की गूँजती आवाज़ में “देखने वाले देख करिश्मा यारों का” और “तेरे गेसुओं का साया” जैसे गीत यादगार बन गए। वहीं आशा भोंसले ने “जान-ओ-दिल दोनों हैं हाज़िर”, “मेरे दिल मेरी जान तू कह दे”, “साजन मेरे दिल में तेरे” और “ये जीवन जितनी बार मिले” जैसे गीतों को अपनी कशिश भरी आवाज़ देकर सुननेवालों को मोह लिया। ये गीत आज भी श्रोताओं के दिलों में गूंजते हैं।
