Introduction

Lootera (1965) is an action-romance musical drama directed by Harbans, featuring Dara Singh, Prithviraj Kapoor, and Nishi in lead roles. The film also included notable performances by Bela Bose, Helen, Hiralal, Kammo, Master Maruti, and Leela Mishra. With Dara Singh portraying a sea dacoit, the film incorporated adventurous elements such as pirate ships, a female sea dacoit played by Kammo, and a strong musical component. Though not a major blockbuster, Lootera enjoyed a surprise silver jubilee run in select theatres like Ashok Cinema in Ahmedabad. Its success, despite the absence of top-tier stars, was considered remarkable.
The film was especially noted for its music, composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal with lyrics by Anand Bakshi. Lata Mangeshkar lent her voice to six solo tracks that were both melodious and widely appreciated. Despite its action-adventure theme, some critics pointed out the film's pacing issues and a lack of on-screen chemistry between Dara Singh and Nishi. It was also critiqued for underlying elements of sexism.
Musically, Lootera stood out with popular songs such as Sanam Rah Bhoole Yahan, Raat Se Kaho Ruke Jara, and Neend Nigahon Se Kho Jati Hai. Of particular interest, Raat Se Kaho Ruke Zara was inspired by Dick Dale's 1962 surf rock instrumental Misirlou, a track that gained renewed fame when it featured in Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction (1994). Misirlou itself was an adaptation of an Eastern Mediterranean folk melody. In a later interview, Pyarelal revealed that it was Laxmikant who adapted the tune for Lootera, and Pyarelal only learned of its origin after actor Shammi Kapoor inquired about it. Interestingly, the same melody was reused by the duo for the song Hum Banjaaron Ki Baat Mat Poochho Ji in the film Dharam Veer.
A final trivia note: some songs from Lootera were included alongside tracks from another film, Parasmani, on a CD released by EMI, highlighting the continued popularity of its music.

लुटेरा (1965) एक ऐक्शन-रोमांस से भरपूर संगीतप्रधान फ़िल्म थी जिसके निर्देशक हरबंस थे।इस फ़िल्म में दारा सिंह, पृथ्वीराज कपूर और निशि मुख्य भूमिकाएँ निभा रहे थे। इसके अलावा फ़िल्म में बेला बोस, हेलेन, हीरालाल, कम्मो, मास्टर मारुति और लीला मिश्रा जैसे कलाकार भी महत्वपूर्ण भूमिकाएँ निभा रहे थे। दारा सिंह ने फ़िल्म में एक समुद्री लुटेरे का किरदार निभाया था। साथ ही फ़िल्म में समुद्री जहाज़ों की कलाबाज़ियाँ थीं, एक महिला समुद्री डाकू (कम्मो) का रोचक किरदार और अनेक रोमांचक तत्व शामिल थे। फ़िल्म का संगीत पक्ष भी मज़बूत था। यह कोई बड़ी ब्लॉकबस्टर नहीं थी लेकिन अहमदाबाद के 'अशोक सिनेमा' जैसे कुछ चुनिन्दा सिनेमाघरों में इसने गज़ब की लोकप्रियता हासिल करते हुए 'सिल्वर जुबली' तक मनाई। बड़े सितारों की गैरमौजूदगी में भी इस फ़िल्म की ऐसी कामयाबी को बहुत उल्लेखनीय माना गया।
इस फ़िल्म का संगीत विशेष रूप से सराहा गया। फ़िल्म के लिए संगीत लक्ष्मीकांत-प्यारेलाल ने तैयार किया था और गीतों के बोल आनंद बख्शी ने लिखे थे। फ़िल्म के लिए छह एकल गीत लता मंगेशकर ने गाए थे जो सभी मधुर थे और बेहद लोकप्रिय हुए। हालाँकि फ़िल्म का विषय रहस्य और रोमांच से भरा था और कुछ समीक्षकों ने इसकी गति को धीमा कहा। कुछ ने दारा सिंह व निशि के बीच स्क्रीन पर सही कैमिस्ट्री की कमी की ओर इशारा किया। फ़िल्म में मौजूद लैंगिक भेदभाव वाली चीज़ों की भी आलोचना हुई।
संगीत के लिहाज़ से देखें तो लुटेरा में “सनम राह भूले यहाँ”, “रात से कहो रुके ज़रा” और “नींद निगाहों से खो जाती है” जैसे लोकप्रिय गीत शामिल थे। इनमें ख़ासतौर पर “रात से कहो रुके ज़रा” की धुन सन् 1962 में आये डिक डेल के सर्फ़ रॉक वाद्य गीत 'मिसिर्लाउ' से प्रेरित थी। यह गीत अमेरिका के चर्चित फ़िल्मकार क्वेंटिन टैरेंटिनो की फ़िल्म पल्प फ़िक्शन (1994) में दोबारा इस्तेमाल होने के बाद फिर से प्रसिद्ध हुई। मूल 'मिसिर्लाउ' की धुन खुद एक पूर्वी भूमध्यसागरीय लोक धुन पर आधारित थी। बाद में दिये एक साक्षात्कार में प्यारेलाल ने बताया था कि लुटेरा फ़िल्म के लिए यह धुन लक्ष्मीकांत ने तैयार की थी और उन्हें इसके पीछे की मूल धुन का पता तभी चला जब अभिनेता शम्मी कपूर ने उनसे इस बारे में पूछा। दिलचस्प बात यह है कि यही धुन बाद में इस जोड़ी ने फ़िल्म धरम वीर (1977) के गीत “हम बनजारों की बात मत पूछो जी” में भी इस्तेमाल की।
एक और रोचक तथ्य यह है कि लुटेरा के कुछ गीतों को पारसमणि नामक फ़िल्म के गीतों के साथ 'ईएमआई' लेबल द्वारा जारी एक सीडी में जारी किया गया था। यह इस फ़िल्म के संगीत की निरंतर चली आ रही लोकप्रियता को दिखाता है।
