Introduction
The story revolves around Ramaki, a poor girl from a scheduled caste, who becomes pregnant out of wedlock by Manekchand, the privileged son of a wealthy landlord, Krishnadas. Outcast by society, Ramaki finds temporary shelter first with a nautch girl and later with a compassionate Muslim man—each step reflecting her descent into a cruel society steeped in prejudice. Ultimately, both she and her protector are heartbroken, and perish in a tragic fire, leaving behind two orphaned children.
These children are taken in by Garibdas Sadhu, a wandering ascetic clearly modelled on Mahatma Gandhi. His character stirred controversy at the time, drawing attention from British colonial censors who viewed the depiction as politically charged. As the children grow up, they unknowingly enter the orbit of Manekchand—now a factory owner—who, unaware of their true identities, falls in love with his own daughter and expropriates land belonging to Garibdas. These twists deepen the film's critique of caste, patriarchy, and capitalist exploitation.
Khuda Ki Shan struck a chord with audiences not only for its emotional narrative, but also for its courageous social commentary. Its depiction of a Gandhi-like reformer made it one of the earliest Indian films to provoke political scrutiny, marking cinema's emerging role as a medium of resistance and social reform.
