Introduction
A thriller film produced by Dev Anand under his home banner, Navketan Films, and directed by Raj Khosla, Kala Pani was a remake of the 1955 Bengali film Sabar Uparey, which starred Uttam Kumar and Chhabi Biswas. The Bengali film itself was based on A.J. Cronin's 1953 novel Beyond This Place. Years later, Dev Anand would star in another film directed by his brother Vijay Anand for Navketan Films, Tere Mere Sapne, which was based on A.J. Cronin's novel The Citadel. While Hindi film adaptations of popular English novels were rare, those that did exist often resulted in memorable and content-rich films.

Determined to clear his father's name, he seeks justice with the help of a fearless journalist and a prostitute who witnessed the crime and holds crucial evidence against the real criminals. Dev Anand played the protagonist, Karan Mehra, while Madhubala portrayed Asha, the courageous journalist, and Nalini Jaywant played Kishori, the prostitute. Agha and Mukri appeared in supporting roles.

Some of the most iconic songs include Hum Bekhudi Mein Tumko Pukarey Chale Gaey by Mohammed Rafi, Achha Ji Main Haari, Chalo Maan Jao Na by Mohammed Rafi and Asha Bhosle, and Nazar Lagi Raja Torey Bangley Per, a mujra song by Asha Bhosle, all of which have remained etched in the minds of music lovers.

काला पानी (1958) का निर्माण देव आनंद के घरेलू बैनर 'नवकेतन फ़िल्म्स' के तहत हुआ था और इसके निर्देशक राज खोसला थे। यह रोमांटिक थ्रिलर फ़िल्म सन् 1955 में बनी उत्तम कुमार और छबि बिश्वास के अभिनय से सजी बांग्ला फ़िल्म साबर उपारे का हिन्दी रीमेक थी। और बांग्ला फ़िल्म खुद लेखक ए.जे. क्रोनिन के 1953 में प्रकाशित अंग्रेज़ी उपन्यास 'बियॉन्ड दिस प्लेस' पर आधारित थी। कई साल बाद देव आनंद ने एक और ऐसी फ़िल्म में काम किया था, जो क्रोनिन के उपन्यास पर आधारित थी। उनके भाई विजय आनंद द्वारा निर्देशित और 'नवकेतन फ़िल्म्स' के बैनर तले निर्मित तेरे मेरे सपने (1971) ए.जे. क्रोनिन के उपन्यास 'दि सिटाडेल' पर आधारित थी। वैसे तो लोकप्रिय अंग्रेजी उपन्यासों के ऊपर हिन्दी फ़िल्म बनाने का ऐसा कोई लोकप्रिय चलन नहीं रहा है, लेकिन जब भी ऐसी कोशिशें हुईं हैं तो अक्सर ही समृद्ध कथानक वाली यादगार फ़िल्में हमें मिलीं। काला पानी की कहानी बाँधनेवाली थी और इसे बड़ी कुशलता से हिन्दी दर्शकों के अनुकूल बनाया गया था। फ़िल्म का कथानक एक ऐसे नौजवान के इर्द-गिर्द घूमता है जिसे हाल ही में मालूम पड़ा है कि उसके पिता को हत्या के एक 15 साल पुराने मामले में गलत तरीके से फंसा दिया गया था। अपने पिता के नाम पर लगा दाग़ मिटाने का इरादा लिये यह नौजवान न्याय की तलाश में एक बेखौफ़ पत्रकार और एक तवायफ़ की मदद लेता है। इस तवायफ़ ने अपराध को होते हुए देखा है और वो असली गुनहगारों तक पहुँचने में उसकी मदद कर सकती है। फ़िल्म में देव आनंद ने नायक करण की भूमिका निभाई है जबकि साहसी पत्रकार आशा की भूमिका में मधुबाला हैं। तवायफ़ के किरदार किशोरी की भूमिका में नलिनी जयवंत हैं। फ़िल्म में अन्य सहायक भूमिकाएँ अभिनेता आगा, मुकरी और किशोर साहू ने निभाई हैं। काला पानी साल 1958 की आठवीं सबसे ज़्यादा कमाई करने वाली हिन्दी फ़िल्म थी। एस.डी. बर्मन के रचे शानदार संगीत और मजरूह सुल्तानपुरी के लिखे शोख़ गीतों के बोलों ने फ़िल्म की कामयाबी को नया मुकाम दिया। मोहम्मद रफ़ी का गाया “हम बेख़ुदी में तुम को पुकारे चले गए”, मोहम्मद रफ़ी और आशा भोंसले का गाया “अच्छा जी मैं हारी, चलो मान जाओ ना” और आशा भोंसले का गाया मुजरा शैली का “नज़र लगी राजा तोरे बंगले पर” जैसे गीत लोकप्रियता की बुलन्दी पर पहुँचे और आज भी सिनेमाई संगीत के चाहनेवालों के दिलों में बसे हुए हैं। रिलीज़ के समय काला पानी को आलोचकों की तारीफ़ें भी मिलीं और व्यावसायिक सफलता भी। फ़िल्म के शीर्ष अभिनेताओं को उनकी अदाकारी के लिए खूब सराहा गया। इसकी झलक अगले साल दिये गए छठे फ़िल्मफ़ेयर पुरस्कारों में भी दिखी, जहाँ देव आनंद ने सर्वश्रेष्ठ अभिनेता का फ़िल्मफ़ेयर पुरस्कार जीता तो नलिनी जयवंत ने सर्वश्रेष्ठ सहायक अभिनेत्री का फ़िल्मफ़ेयर पुरस्कार हासिल किया।
