Jeevan Naiya (1936) Directed by Franz Osten, and produced by Himanshu Rai for his studio Bombay Talkies, this film is known as being the screen debut of early superstar Ashok Kumar, and its theme was about the ostracism of dancing girls. The film was one of several successful Bombay Talkies collaborations between Franz Osten, Himashu Rai, screenwriters J. S. Kashyap and Niranjan Pal, and their leading lady of the time, Devika Rani. Its director Osten was born Franz Ostermayr in Munich on 23 December 1876. He trained to be a photographer like his father and gave acting a try. जीवन नैया (1936) का निर्माण हिमांशु राय ने अपने स्टूडियो बॉम्बे टॉकीज़ के बैनर तले किया था और इसके निर्देशक उस दौर की कई हिन्दी फ़िल्में निर्देशित करनेवाले जर्मन फ्रांज़ ऑस्टेन थे। यह फ़िल्म इसलिए भी याद की जाती है कि इसी फ़िल्म से आरंभिक हिन्दी सिनेमा के बड़े सितारे और प्रसिद्ध अभिनेता अशोक कुमार के अभिनय करियर की शुरुआत हुई थी। इस फ़िल्म की कहानी नाचने वाली लड़कियों की समाज में स्वीकार्यता को अपना विषय बनाती है। बॉम्बे टॉकीज़ स्टूडियो के बैनर तले निर्देशक फ्रांज़ ऑस्टेन, निर्माता हिमांशु राय, पटकथा लेखक जे.एस. कश्यप और निरंजन पाल तथा उस दौर की प्रमुख नायिका देविका रानी की टोली ने एक समूह के तौर पर जिन सफल फ़िल्मों की रचना की, जीवन नैया भी उसी शृंखला की एक ज़रूरी कड़ी कही जा सकती है। जीवन नैया के निर्देशक फ्रांज़ ऑस्टेन के जीवन की कहानी बहुत दिलचस्प है। उनका जन्म 23 दिसंबर, 1876 के दिन म्यूनिख, जर्मनी में हुआ था। अपने पिता की तरह उन्हें भी फ़ोटोग्राफ़ी का शौक था और उन्होंने इसका प्रशिक्षण लिया और लगे हाथ अभिनय में भी हाथ आज़माया। सन् 1907 में उन्होंने अपने भाई पीटर ओस्टरमायर के साथ मिलकर 'ओरिजिनल फिज़ोग्राफ़ कंपनी' नाम से एक घुमक्कड़ सिनेमा की स्थापना की। बाद में इन्हीं पीटर ओस्टरमायर ने 'बवेरिया फ़िल्म स्टूडियो'...
