Introduction

Ishaara (1943) Directed by J.K. Nanda, it was the tenth highest-grossing Indian film of that year. The film featured an ensemble cast including Prithviraj Kapoor, Suraiya, Swaran Lata, Jagdish Sethi, and K. N. Singh. It also marked the Hindi film debut of Khwaja Khurshid Anwar as a music director.

The story revolves around two brothers: the elder is kind-hearted and serves as a moral compass, while the younger is impulsive and ignores the warnings and subtle cues—or isharas—from his elder sibling. The narrative delves into the emotional and moral consequences of these choices, exploring the evolving dynamic between the brothers. The film was inspired by Gong of Shiva, an English novel by Dewan Sharar, which addressed the socially contentious issue of Hindu widow remarriage.

Ishaara also marked the first major commercial success for Suraiya, who not only acted in the film but also sang several songs. The soundtrack included Bagon Mein Koyal Boli – Suraiya; Dheere Dheere Bol Mere Raja – Rajkumari and G.M. Durrani; Hamen Gham Deke Na Jao Sajan – Gauhar Sultan; Ishq Ka Dard Suhana – Vatsala Kumthekar; Panghat Pe Muraliya Baje – Suraiya, and Shabnam Kyon Neer Bahaye – Gauhar Sultana.
