Introduction

Husn Ka Daku (1929), directed by Babubhai Mistry, is regarded as one of the earliest surviving Indian films. The title, roughly translated as The Thief of Beauty or The Dacoit of Beauty, is a drama about a dacoit (bandit) who falls in love with a beautiful woman. However, details about the film's plot and cast are scarce, making it a significant yet mysterious piece of Indian cinematic history.

The action-adventure film was directed by A. R. Kardar, marking his first directorial venture. Also known as Mysterious Eagle, the film was produced by Kardar's Playart Phototone, a successor to the United Player's Corporation, which Kardar founded in 1928. This company played a pivotal role in laying the foundations for the Lahore film industry, based in the Bhati Gate area of Lahore. The director of photography for the film was D. D. Dabke.

The film premiered at Deepak Cinema in Lahore on July 12, 1930, and, according to historian Haroon Khalid, grossed "48 rupees, 6 anna, and 3 paisa" in its opening week.

Abdul Rashid Kardar, born in 1904 in Lahore, was a multi-talented figure—renowned as a director, painter, and still photographer. After moving to Bombay in 1922, Kardar's career took off, although he eventually returned to Lahore and founded Playart Phototone. He later became one of the most significant directors in the Indian film industry, particularly known for his work in the 1940s.

हुस्न का डाकू (1929) के निर्देशक अब्दुल रशीद कारदार थे। यह भारतीय सिनेमा के शुरुआती दौर की उन फ़िल्मों में से है जो बाद तक बची रहीं। शीर्षक के अनुरूप इस फ़िल्म की पटकथा एक ऐसे डाकू की कहानी है जो एक हुस्नपरी को अपना दिल दे बैठता है। हालाँकि इस फ़िल्म के और इसके कलाकारों के बारे में ज़्यादा जानकारियाँ उपलब्ध नहीं हैं, पर इसके चलते यह भारतीय सिनेमा के इतिहास का एक छिपा हुआ पर महत्वपूर्ण हिस्सा बनी हुई है।
यह एक रहस्य और रोमांच से भरपूर फ़िल्म थी जिसके साथ ए. आर. करदार अपनी निर्देशकीय पारी की शुरुआत करते हैं। इस फ़िल्म को 'मिस्टीरियस ईगल' नाम से भी जाना जाता है। इसका निर्माण करदार की 'प्लेयार्ट फ़ोटोटोन' कंपनी ने किया था, जिसे उनके द्वारा 1928 में स्थापित 'यूनाइटेड प्लेयर्स कॉरपोरेशन' स्टूडियो का उत्तराधिकारी माना जा सकता है। इस कंपनी की लाहौर में फ़िल्म उद्योग की नींव रखने में महत्वपूर्ण भूमिका रही। लाहौर में भाटी दरवाज़े के पास का इलाक़ा फ़िल्म उद्योग का केंद्र बनकर उभरा। इस फ़िल्म के सिनेमैटोग्राफ़र डी. डी. डबके थे।
हुस्न का डाकू फ़िल्म का प्रदर्शन 12 जुलाई, 1930 के दिन लाहौर के 'दीपक सिनेमा' में किया गया था। इतिहासकार हारून खालिद के अनुसार फ़िल्म ने अपने शुरुआती सप्ताह में ही 48 रुपये, 6 आने और 3 पैसे की कमाई की थी।
अब्दुल रशीद कारदार का जन्म 1904 में लाहौर में हुआ था। वे एक बहुमुखी प्रतिभा के धनी व्यक्तित्व थे। उन्होंने निर्देशक, चित्रकार और फ़ोटोग्राफर की विविधरंगी भूमिकाओं में खूब नाम कमाया। सन् 1922 में बंबई आने के बाद कारदार के करियर ने रफ़्तार पकड़ी। हालाँकि बाद में वे लाहौर लौटे और 'प्लेयार्ट फ़ोटोटोन' कंपनी की स्थापना की। आगे चलकर उनका नाम भारतीय फ़िल्म जगत के सबसे प्रभावशाली निर्देशकों की सूची में जुड़ा। ख़ासकर 1940 के दशक में बनाई गई फ़िल्मों के लिए उन्हें बहुत ख्याति हासिल हुई।
