Introduction

Hum Dono (1961) the Dev Anand Vijay Anand combination for their home production Navketan Films Hum Dono credited to director Amarjeet was a romantic drama that has turned into a cult classic over the past decades. film produced by Dev Anand and Navketan films. Years later Dev Anand claimed that that ait wasn't Amarjeet but Vijay Anand who had directed the film that was also based on his own script. With Anand in a double role, it had Nanda and Sadhana opposite him with Leela Chitnis playing his mother. Though the film was a major box office hit, perhaps, what film and music buffs mostly remember this film for is its music by Pandit Jaidev and its lyrics by Sahir Ludhianvi that remains mesmerizingly appealing even among teenyboppers today. History has it that S D Burman and Sahir Ludhianvi had fallen out due to a minor disagreement over remuneration for another film Pyaasa (1957). Sahir commented that his lyrics made the songs in Pyaasa (1957) unforgettable and a commercial success which made Burman get hurt by high-handedness and refused to work with him again. Things became difficult for the film since Vijay Dutt had already signed Sahir for the film before he approached Burman to compose. It issaid that when an enraged Burman refused, Vijay had no option but to approach Burman's assistant Jaidev. The gems that he created Abhi Na Jao Chhodkar sung by Mohammed Rafi, Asha Bhosle; Prabhu Teroo Naam by Lata Mangeshkar; Jahan Mein Aisa Kaun Hai by Asha Bhosle; Kabhi Khud Pe Kabhi Haalaat Pe Rona Aaya and Mai Zindagi Ka Saath Nibhata Chala Gaya by Mohammed Rafi, are all-time greats that seem to never fade away with time. Along with them, Lata's Allah tero naam…helped her attain a divine godlike status with her rendition.

It was later made in Telugu as Ramuni Minchina Ramudu with N. T. Rama Rao. Also, a Bengali film Uttarayan was made starring Uttam Kumar in the lead based on a novel by Tarashankar Bandopadhyay. Hum Dono's story is loosely based on Uttarayan. It was relaunched in colour after exactly 50 years on 4 February 2011.
