Hamrahi (1944): featured artwork

Introduction

Hamrahi (1944) marked the directorial debut of Bimal Roy, a landmark romantic-realist melodrama that profoundly impacted the trajectory of Indian cinema. Notably, it was the first film to feature Rabindranath Tagore's "Jana Gana Mana" before it officially became the national anthem of India.

The film was a remake of the popular Bengali version, Udayer Pathey (1944), which earned critical acclaim as a film for intellectuals, fulfilling the higher purpose of cinema. Bimal Roy, after establishing himself as a cinematographer with New Theatres, Calcutta, transitioned to directing with Hamrahi. Udayer Pathey was his debut directorial venture in Bengali cinema, while Hamrahi marked his Hindi film directorial debut.

The original story and dialogues for the Bengali version were written by Jyotirmoy Roy, while the Hindi version's dialogues were penned by Mohanlal Bajpai. Produced by New Theatres, Calcutta, the film featured Bimal Roy as its cinematographer. Raichand Boral composed the music, with lyrics by Zakir Husain. The storyline explores the disparity between the rich and the poor, a frequent theme in Indian cinema. The character of Anup, portrayed by Radhamohan Bhattacharya, is an idealistic man from the impoverished ranks of society who challenges the exploiting capitalist forces, represented by Rajendra. Binota Roy played Gopa, Anup's love interest, who comes from a wealthy family.

It was one of the early notable works by renowned Indian director Bimal Roy, and also a commercial success, particularly Udayer Pathey, which was a massive hit at the box-office. Both films received positive responses from audiences, with their success attributed to the strong social commentary and impactful storytelling.

Raichand Boral's music direction contributed significantly to the film's success and many of the songs were performed by Binota Bose, while Hemant Kumar joined for a duet, and there were also a couple of songs sung by a chorus.
