Hamrahi (1944) marked the directorial debut of Bimal Roy, a landmark romantic-realist melodrama that profoundly impacted the trajectory of Indian cinema. हमराही (1944) भारतीय सिनेमा में बहुत मक़बूल हुए फ़िल्म निर्देशक बिमल रॉय की पहली हिन्दी फ़िल्म थी। यह फ़िल्म एक रोमांटिक-यथार्थवादी मेलोड्रामा थी और इसने भारतीय सिनेमा के भविष्य की राह तय करने में ख़ास भूमिका निभाई। यह फ़िल्म इसलिए भी उल्लेखनीय है क्योंकि इसमें रवींद्रनाथ टैगोर के लिखे गीत 'जन गण मन' को पहली बार सिनेमा के पर्दे पर प्रस्तुत किया गया था। यह इस गीत के आधिकारिक रूप से भारत का राष्ट्रगान बनने से पहले की बात है। हमराही बांग्ला भाषा में बनी लोकप्रिय फिल्म उदयेर पाथे (1944) का हिन्दी रीमेक थी। उदयेर पाथे को आलोचकों की बहुत तारीफ़ मिली थी और इसे बौद्धिक भद्रलोक की कलात्मक भूख को संतुष्ट करने वाली फ़िल्म कहा गया। बिमल रॉय ने इससे पहले कलकत्ता के 'न्यू थिएटर्स' के साथ बतौर सिनेमैटोग्राफ़र अपना फ़िल्मी करियर शुरु किया था। उसी बैनर तले उदयेर पाथे के साथ रॉय ने बांग्ला सिनेमा में निर्देशन की शुरुआत की और हमराही उनके निर्देशन में निर्मित पहली हिन्दी फ़िल्म बनी।बांग्ला भाषा में फ़िल्म की मूल कहानी और संवाद ज्योतिर्मय रॉय ने लिखे थे जबकि हिन्दी फ़िल्म के लिए संवाद मोहनलाल बाजपेयी ने लिखे। फ़िल्म का निर्माण कलकत्ता के 'न्यू थिएटर्स' के बैनर तले हुआ और खुद बिमल रॉय इसमें सिनेमैटोग्राफ़ी की ज़िम्मेदारी संभाल रहे थे। फ़िल्म के संगीत...
