Grave Keeper's Tale2006
Introduction
Body of Work
A Grave-Keeper's Tale, based on a short story by eminent writer Mahasweta Devi, is about a woman who works in a graveyard. Her job, an ancestral legacy, is to bury the dead bodies of small children. However, when she herself becomes a mother, she no longer wishes to do this work. But no one, not even her husband, understands her emotional and physical state. Society simply forces her to continue because no one else is there to replace her. When she ultimately rebels, she is punished and regarded as a witch, since people will not accept those who break social rules and traditions.
