                          Scene DescriptionGhasiram wakes up from his siesta, quite startled and goes straight outside to see Dukhi asleep under a tree, the monstrous log still quite intact. He angrily censures Dukhi for sleeping, instead of doing an impossible task for which he will not be paid. His tyrannical demeanour frightens Dukhi back to work, and we are then presented with a particularly distressing picture of inequality: the sick and hungry unpaid labourer frantically wielding his axe while the well-fed, comfortable brahman goads him on with inane instructions such as “Use your strength!” and “Chop harder!” like a spectator barracking a sportsman.
