Mac Mohan
McMohan Makijany (24 April 1938 - 10 May 2010) Widely known as Mac Mohan, he was a prominent Indian actor associated with Hindi cinema. Renowned for his portrayals of antagonistic characters during the 1970s and 1980s, he built an extensive filmography of more than 200 films, including Don (1978), Karz (1980), Satte Pe Satta (1982), Zanjeer (1973), Rafoo Chakkar (1975), Shaan (1980), Khoon Pasina (1977), and Sholay (1975).
He remains most enduringly associated with the character Sambha in Sholay, a role that secured him a lasting place in the cultural memory of Indian cinema. Despite limited screen time and dialogue, his performance became emblematic of the film's narrative power. Beyond this defining role, Mac Mohan sustained a long and versatile career spanning four decades, frequently appearing in supporting roles as a villain's associate or as a distinctive character actor whose screen presence left a notable impression.
Mac Mohan was born in Karachi, then part of British India, he was the maternal uncle of actress Raveena Tandon. He initially moved to Bombay with aspirations of becoming a cricketer, but soon gravitated toward theatre, eventually pursuing a career in cinema. He trained in acting at the Filmalaya School of Acting in Bombay, which laid the foundation for his professional trajectory.
He began his career in Hindi cinema as an assistant to director Chetan Anand, subsequently making his acting debut in Haqeeqat in 1964. His final screen appearance was a guest role in Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge (2009). In addition to Hindi films, he worked across multiple regional industries, including Bhojpuri, Gujarati, Haryanvi, Marathi, Punjabi, Bengali, and Sindhi cinema. His linguistic versatility extended to delivering dialogues in several Indian languages, as well as in English, Russian, and Spanish productions. Notably, he was among the few actors whose real name, Mac, was frequently retained for his on-screen characters.
In his personal life, Mac Mohan married Minny in 1986. The couple had three children: daughters Manjari Makijany and Vinati Makijany, and a son, Vikrant Makijany. Minny Makijany, an Ayurvedic doctor, first met him during a period when his father was admitted to Arogya Nidhi Hospital in Juhu; their acquaintance subsequently developed into marriage. Accounts from contemporaries note his strong command of spoken and written English, as well as his keen interest in reading, particularly newspapers and the magazine Reader's Digest.
In November 2009, shortly before he was scheduled to begin shooting for Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge, Mac Mohan was admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Andheri, Mumbai, following a decline in his health. Diagnosed with a tumour in his right lung that progressed to lung cancer, he passed away on 10 May 2010 at the age of 72. Memorial gatherings were held in his honour, including a prayer meeting organized by the Asian Academy of Film and Television in Noida Film City and another at Ajivasan Hall attended by family, colleagues, and members of the film industry.
