Konkona Sen Sharma

Konkona Sen Sharma (born 3 December 1979) is an acclaimed Indian actor and filmmaker whose work has significantly shaped contemporary Bengali and Hindi cinema. Renowned for her nuanced performances across parallel and mainstream cinema, she has established herself as one of the most accomplished actors of her generation. A recipient of two National Film Awards, three Filmfare Awards, and several other prestigious honours, she has consistently been recognised for her artistic versatility and commitment to meaningful cinema. In 2022, she was included in Outlook India's list of the 75 Best Bollywood Actresses, reflecting her enduring contribution to Indian cinema.

Born into an eminent cultural family, Sen Sharma is the daughter of filmmaker and actor Aparna Sen and science writer and journalist Mukul Sharma. Her maternal grandfather, Chidananda Dasgupta, was a distinguished film critic, scholar, and co-founder of the Calcutta Film Society. She completed her schooling at Modern High School for Girls, Kolkata, and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in English from St. Stephen's College, Delhi, in 2001.

Sen Sharma began her screen career as a child actor in Indira (1983) and made her debut in a leading role with the Bengali thriller Ek Je Aachhe Kanya (2000). Her breakthrough came with Aparna Sen's Mr. and Mrs. Iyer (2002), in which her portrayal of a Tamil Brahmin woman navigating communal violence earned her the National Film Award for Best Actress and established her as a major talent in Indian cinema.

Her entry into Hindi cinema with Page 3 (2005) marked the beginning of an exceptionally successful phase. She delivered critically acclaimed performances in films such as 15 Park Avenue, Dosar, Omkara, Life in a... Metro, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag, Luck By Chance, Wake Up Sid, and Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge?. Her performance in Omkara won the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actress alongside the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actress, while Life in a... Metro earned her a second consecutive Filmfare Award in the same category. She continued to demonstrate remarkable range in later films including Ek Thi Daayan, Goynar Baksho, Talvar, Lipstick Under My Burkha, Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi, and the anthology Ajeeb Daastaans, for which she received the Filmfare OTT Award for Best Actor in a Web Original Film (Female).

Beyond acting, Sen Sharma has emerged as a distinguished filmmaker. Her directorial debut, A Death in the Gunj (2017), premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival to widespread critical acclaim. The film earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Debut Director, the Gollapudi Srinivas National Award for Best Debut Director, and Best Director honours at both the New York Indian Film Festival and the Mumbai Academy of Moving Image (MAMI) Film Festival. She further expanded her directorial oeuvre by helming a segment in Lust Stories 2 (2023), reaffirming her position as one of the most significant creative voices in contemporary Indian cinema.
