K K Mahajan
Kewal Krishan Mahajan (1944–2007), professionally known as K. K. Mahajan, was a well-known Indian cinematographer who worked on 84 feature films, numerous documentaries, and advertisements. He made significant and innovative contributions to Parallel Cinema and the Indian New Wave movement, where he captured the essence of social realist narratives through a masterful use of natural light and composition.
A graduate of Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) in Pune (1966), Mahajan started his cinematography career with student projects, most notably Kumar Shahani's diploma project, The Glass Plane (1966) that caught the attention of Mrinal Sen. Sen chose Mahajan to shoot the landmark film, Bhuvan Shome (1969), a film that marked the beginning of the Indian New Wave. Starting with Bhuvan Shome, Mahajan collaborated extensively with Sen on over 14 films, including acclaimed ones such as Interview (1971), Calcutta 71 (1972), Padatik (1973), Chorus (1974), Ek Din Pratidin (1979), Akaler Sandhane (1980), and Khandhar (1983). Over the next four decades, Mahajan also collaborated with other key figures of the Indian New Wave movement like Mani Kaul on Uski Roti (1970), Kumar Shahani on Maya Darpan (1972), and Basu Chatterjee on Sara Aakash (1969), Piya Ka Ghar (1971), Rajnigandha (1974), Chhoti Si Baat (1975), Chitchor (1976), Swami (1977) and Manzil (1979).
Influenced by the French New Wave, Italian neorealism, and Subrata Mitra, known for his collaborations with Satyajit Ray, Mahajan's cinematography emphasized natural lighting and inventive improvisations that highlighted as well as complemented the depth and intensity of the social realist themes of the films. He pioneered the minimal and realist style that came to be widely associated with the Indian New Wave. In Bhuvan Shome (1969), Mahajan experimented with reflectors, scrims, and improvised methods such as removing roof tiles for interior illumination to shape natural light. For Shahani's Maya Darpan (1972), Mahajan shot the entire film using only photofloods and natural light, which resulted in a muted, desaturated palette that reflected the film's themes of stasis and transition. His collaboration with Mani Kaul on Uski Roti (1970) further exemplified his formalist experimentation. He used minimal lighting for night scenes and long, static takes with a 135mm telephoto lens to produce flattened, painterly frames inspired by Amrita Sher-Gil.
Mahajan's accolades include four National Film Awards for Best Cinematography for Sara Akash (1969), Uski Roti (1970), Maya Darpan (1972), and Chorus (1974). He was also conferred the lifetime achievement honours from the Indian Documentary Producers Association (2005), the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA, 2006), and an honorary membership in the Indian Society of Cinematographers (2003).
