Johnny Walker

Badruddin Jamaluddin Kazi (23 March 1924 – 29 July 2003) celebrated across Indian cinema as Johnny Walker, he appeared in nearly 300 films and became synonymous with the lovable, bumbling drunkard, despite being a lifelong teetotaller. Born in Indore, then part of British India, he was one of twelve children of a weaving teacher. His early life shifted dramatically when his father lost his job and the family moved to Mumbai, where Kazi became a BEST bus conductor. His exuberant announcements and impromptu mimicry made him a favourite among commuters and planted the seeds of his film career.

Walker idolised comedy legend Noor Mohammed Charlie and longed for the screen. His break arrived when actor Balraj Sahni, amused by Kazi's comic routines, introduced him to filmmaker Guru Dutt. Impressed by Kazi's pitch-perfect drunkard act, Dutt cast him in Baazi (1951) and bestowed on him the name Johnny Walker, inspired by the whisky brand. Their creative partnership flourished: Walker appeared in all but one of Dutt's films, encouraged to improvise freely and draw on his colourful life for humour.

Regarded among the greatest comedians in Indian cinema, Walker influenced generations, from Mehmood and Johnny Lever to Govinda and Rajpal Yadav. Equally passionate about poetry, he could summon a fitting ashaar for any moment and was remembered as a gentle soul who kept colleagues in high spirits.

His stardom peaked in the 1950s and 1960s with memorable performances in Mere Mehboob, C.I.D., Pyaasa and Chori Chori. He cherished his roles in Naya Daur (1957), Taxi Driver (1954) and Madhumati (1958). Such was his popularity that distributors often demanded a special song for him. Unusually, two films were named after him—Johnny Walker (1957) and Johnnie Walker (1992). A trendsetter, he was the first Indian actor to employ a manager, avoid Sunday shoots and introduce colloquial speech to cinema through Taxi Driver.

Walker stepped back from films in the 1980s, disillusioned by what he saw as diminishing respect for comedians, but returned after 14 years for Chachi 420 (1997). Away from screen life, he ran a successful gems business.

He married Noorjahan, sister of actress Shakila, and ensured his six children received the education he was denied.

In 2022, he was honoured in Outlook India's list of the 75 Best Bollywood Actors.
