Introduction

Gazal (1964) A romance musical in Urdu directed by Ved-Madan and starring Sunil Dutt, Meena Kumari and Prithviraj Kapoor, the Muslim social film was about the right of young generation to the marriage of their choice. Made under the banner Natraj Productions it was made in black and white. Other supporting cast included Rehman, Rajendra Nath, Nazima, Raj Mehra, Minoo Mumtaz, Pratima Devi and Mohsin Abdullah.
Set in Agra, the film is the story of Ejaz (Sunil Dutt), who is the editor of Inquilab. When he listens to Naaz Ara Begum (Meena Kumari) sing, he falls deeply in love with her. However, he soon loses his job. Ejaz and Naaz manage to meet secretly, with help of Naaz's sister Kausar. This relationship angers many people. Nawab Bakar Ali Khan (Prithviraj Kapoor) her father who wants Naaz to marry Akhtar Nawab (Rehman), her paternal cousin.
Madan Mohan composed the music for the film, with lyrics by Sahir Ludhianvi. The soundtrack features some of the most memorable ghazals in Hindi cinema, including performances by Mohammed Rafi, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhosle, Suman Kalyanpur, and Minoo Purshottam. Songs like Rang Aur Noor Ki Baraat and Naghma O Sher Ki Saugaat are especially celebrated for their lyrical beauty and emotional depth. A unique feature of the soundtrack is the use of a shared refrain across three songs, each presenting different emotional tones.
It was not a big hit at the box office. While it was a well-regarded social Muslim film with a strong cast and beautiful music, it underperformed due to the then-growing popularity of cinema in colour, as it was a black and white movie.
Although the film's visual presentation remained in black and white at a time when colour films were gaining traction, its music and performances, particularly by Meena Kumari and Sunil Dutt, have ensured its lasting appeal. Despite its lacklustre box office performance, Gazal is remembered today for its poignant storytelling and its hauntingly beautiful music that continues to resonate with lovers of classic Hindi cinema. Though not commercially successful—largely due to the growing dominance of colour films at the time—it is remembered as a poignant portrayal of love and tradition, with a haunting soundtrack that continues to captivate admirers of classic Hindi cinema.

ग़ज़ल (1964) एक उर्दू-हिन्दी में बनी एक रोमांटिक संगीतप्रधान फ़िल्म थी जिसके निर्देशक द्वय वेद-मदन थे। इस फ़िल्म में सुनील दत्त, मीना कुमारी और पृथ्वीराज कपूर ने मुख्य भूमिकाएँ निभाईं थीं। आलोचकों द्बारा 'मुस्लिम सोशल' श्रेणी में रखी जानेवाली फ़िल्मों में शामिल यह फ़िल्म नए दौर की युवा पीढ़ी के अपनी पसन्द से विवाह करने के अधिकार से जुड़े मुद्दे को उठाती है। 'नटराज प्रोडक्शन्स' के बैनर तले बनी यह फ़िल्म श्वेत-श्याम छवियों के साथ बनाई गई थी।
फ़िल्म में सहायक भूमिकाओं में रहमान, राजेन्द्र नाथ, नाज़िमा, राज मेहरा, मीनू मुमताज़, प्रतिमा देवी और मोहसिन अब्दुल्ला जैसे कलाकार काम कर रहे थे। इस फ़िल्म की कहानी आगरा शहर में घटती है। यहाँ शहर में 'इंकलाब' नामक अख़बार का संपादक एक एजाज़ (सुनील दत्त) नामक युवा है। यही एजाज़ जब नाज़ आरा बेग़म (मीना कुमारी) को गाते हुए सुनता है तो उन पर मर मिटता है। हालाँकि परिस्थितियाँ कुछ ऐसी बनती हैं कि उसे जल्द ही अपनी नौकरी से हाथ धोना पड़ता है। एजाज़ और नाज़, नाज़ की बहन कौसर की मदद से चोरी छिपे मिलते हैं। पर उनका यह प्रेम कई लोगों को नागवार गुज़रता है। ख़ास तौर पर नाज़ के पिता नवाब बाकर अली ख़ान (पृथ्वीराज कपूर) साहब को, जो चाहते हैं कि नाज़ का विवाह उनके भतीजे अख़्तर नवाब (रहमान) से हो।
इस फ़िल्म के लिए संगीत मदन मोहन ने तैयार किया था और इसके गीत लिखे थे साहिर लुधियानवी ने। इस फ़िल्म ने हिन्दी सिनेमा को उसकी चंद सबसे यादगार ग़ज़लें दी हैं जिन्हें मोहम्मद रफ़ी, लता मंगेशकर, आशा भोंसले, सुमन कल्याणपुर और मीनू पुरुषोत्तम जैसे स्वरों ने अपनी अद्भुत गायकी से सजाया है। “रंग और नूर की बारात” और “नग़्मा ओ शेर की सौग़ात” जैसे गीत तो ख़ास तौर से अपनी काव्यात्मक खूबसूरती और भावनात्मक गहराई के लिए सराहे जाते हैं। इन गीतों की एक अनोखी विशेषता यह भी थी कि फ़िल्म के तीन अलग-अलग गीतों में एक ही टेक का इस्तेमाल किया गया मगर फिर भी तीनों गीतों की भिन्न भावनात्मक ज़मीन रही।
यह फ़िल्म टिकट खिड़की पर ज़्यादा कामयाब नहीं रही। हाँ, इसे एक गंभीर और ज़रूरी सामाजिक मुद्दे पर बनी फ़िल्म माना गया जिसमें सशक्त अभिनय था और सुंदर संगीत था। फिर भी यह उस समय बन रही दूसरी रंगीन फ़िल्मों की बढ़ती लोकप्रियता के सामने पिछड़ गई क्योंकि यह श्वेत-श्याम रंगों में बनी थी।
हालाँकि उस दौर में रंगीन फ़िल्मों का प्रभाव बढ़ रहा था जबकि ग़ज़ल के दृश्य श्वेत-श्याम में फ़िल्माए गए थे, फिर भी इसका संगीत और उससे भी बढ़कर मीना कुमारी और सुनील दत्त का सशक्त अभिनय इसे सिनेमा इतिहास में एक स्थायी जगह देने में कामयाब रहा। भले यह फ़िल्म व्यापारिक दृष्टि से कामयाब नहीं रही हो लेकिन आज इसे उसकी भावप्रवण कहानी और दिल को छू लेने वाले संगीत के लिए याद किया जाता है। आज भी इसका संगीत यादगार फ़िल्मों को स्मृति में रखनेवाले हिन्दी सिनेमा प्रेमियों को आकर्षित करता है। उस समय रंगीन फ़िल्मों के बढ़ते वर्चस्व के कारण यह फ़िल्म व्यावसायिक रूप से कामयाब नहीं हो सकी। फिर भी यह प्रेम और परम्परा दोनों के मर्मस्पर्शी चित्रण के कारण सिनेमा इतिहास की एक यादगार फ़िल्म रही। ऐसी फ़िल्म जिसके संगीत से निकलीं आत्मीय धुनें आज भी सिनेप्रेमियों के दिलों में गूंजती हैं।
