Introduction

Garam Coat (1955), directed by Amar Kumar and written by the acclaimed writer Rajinder Singh Bedi, is an adaptation of Nikolai Gogol's short story The Overcoat (1842). Set against the backdrop of post-partition North India, a period marked by economic turmoil, social fracture, and growing disillusionment with the state, the film brings a fresh perspective to Gogol's original story. While the core theme remains, Bedi reimagines the plot, diverging significantly from the original, and offers a more hopeful conclusion, in stark contrast to Gogol's bleak ending where the protagonist becomes a ghost.
The film stars Balraj Sahni, Nirupa Roy, Jayant, Brahm Bhardwaj, Rashid Khan and Vijayalaxmi. Garam Coat was the inaugural project of Cine Co-operative, a production company founded by Bedi, Balraj Sahni, and actress Geeta Bali in 1954. Unfortunately, the film did not perform well commercially, leading Bedi to return to writing screenplays for other filmmakers, contributing to works like Madhumati (1958) and Anuradha (1960). His next project as a producer came in 1962 with Rungoli.
The film's music was composed by classical singer Pandit Amarnath, with lyrics by Majrooh Sultanpuri. Songs like "Nanhe Re Munne Re Nanhaa Moraa Dole Mori Anganaiyaa", "Ghar Aaja More Raaja More Raaja Aaja", "Zulfonwaale Ko Kyaa Pataa Ghunghat Men Jal Gai Gori", and "Kahiyo Roen Dukhiyaare Jaa Re Panchhi Tu Jaa Re", beautifully rendered by Lata Mangeshkar, were cherished by classical music enthusiasts, though they did not gain widespread popularity among the masses. गरम कोट (1955) के निर्देशक थे अमर कुमार और इस फ़िल्म के लेखक थे उर्दू-हिन्दी के उस दौर के प्रसिद्ध अफ़सानानिगार राजिंदर सिंह बेदी। फ़िल्म की पटकथा नामचीन रूसी लेखक निकोलाई गोगोल की प्रसिद्ध कहानी 'दि ओवरकोट' (1842) पर आधारित है। यह फ़िल्म विभाजन घावों से लहूलुहान उत्तर भारत को कथा की पृष्ठभूमि के बतौर इस्तेमाल करती है जहाँ गहराता आर्थिक संकट, सामाजिक बिखराव और राज्य की संस्था में लोगों का टूटता भरोसा निराशा का माहौल रच रहा था। पर फ़िल्म निकोलाई गोगोल की मूल कहानी में कुछ महत्वपूर्ण बदलाव भी करती है। फ़िल्म के मूल कथ्य को बदले बिना भी राजिंदर सिंह बेदी कहानी को एक नया उम्मीदभरा मोड़ देते हैं। मूल कहानी के निराशा में डूबे अन्त के विपरीत यहाँ कथानक एक आशावादी मोड़ लेकर पूरा होता है।
इस फ़िल्म में बलराज साहनी, निरूपा रॉय, जयंत, ब्रह्म भारद्वाज, राशिद खान और विजयलक्ष्मी मुख्य भूमिकाएँ निभा रहे थे। गरम कोट निर्माण कंपनी 'सिने को-ऑपरेटिव' के बैनर तले निर्मित पहली फ़िल्म थी। 'सिने को-ऑपरेटिव' निर्माण कंपनी का आरंभ वर्ष 1954 में राजिंदर सिंह बेदी, बलराज साहनी और अभिनेत्री गीता बाली ने मिलकर किया था। पर दुर्भाग्यवश गरम कोट व्यावसायिक रूप से कामयाब नहीं रही, जिसके चलते राजिंदर सिंह बेदी को दोबारा दूसरे फ़िल्म निर्माताओं के लिए पटकथाएँ लिखने के काम पर लौटना पड़ा। इसके बाद के दौर में बेदी ने मधुमति (1958) और अनुराधा (1960) जैसी यादगार फिल्में लिखने में भूमिका निभाई। बतौर निर्माता उनकी अगली फ़िल्म रंगोली (1962) थी।
गरम कोट का संगीत शास्त्रीय गायक पंडित अमरनाथ ने तैयार किया था और इसके लिए गीत मजरूह सुल्तानपुरी ने लिखे थे। लता मंगेशकर के गाए फ़िल्म के "नन्हे रे मुन्ने रे नन्हा मोरा डोले मोरी अंगनइया", "घर आजा मोरे राजा मोरे राजा आजा", "ज़ुल्फों वाले को क्या पता घूँघट में जल गई गोरी" और "काहियो रोए दुखियारे जा रे पंछी तू जा रे" जैसे गीत शास्त्रीय संगीत को चाहनेवाले श्रोताओं को तो बहुत पसन्द आए लेकिन ये गाने आम जनता के बीच ज़्यादा लोकप्रियता हासिल नहीं कर सके। यह श्वेत-श्याम फ़िल्म टिकट खिड़की पर असफल रही।
पर गरम कोट ने 1956 का सर्वश्रेष्ठ कहानी का फ़िल्मफ़ेयर पुरस्कार जीता, जिसे राजिंदर सिंह बेदी द्वारा किये गोगोल की कहानी के उम्दा रूपांतरण का सम्मान कहा जा सकता है।
