इस फ़िल्म की कहानी चंदूलाल भागूभाई दलाल की लिखी 'हरिलाल गांधी: ए लाइफ़' नामक हरिलाल गांधी की जीवनी पर आधारित है। इसके साथ ही फ़िल्म का कथानक खुद फ़िरोज अब्बास खान द्वारा निर्देशित नाटक 'महात्मा वर्सेस गांधी' से भी लिया गया है। फ़िरोज़ अब्बास खान का यह नाटक गुजराती लेखक दिनकर जोशी के उपन्यास 'उजाले की परछाईं' पर आधारित था।
फ़िल्म की कहानी हरिलाल गांधी के जीवन की उस कशमकश को दिखाती है जिसमें वह अपने पिता की तरह बैरिस्टर बनने का सपना देखता है, लेकिन गांधीजी ने उसके लिए अलग ही त्याग और बलिदान से रचा मार्ग चुना है। अपने पिता की दिखाई राह और अपनी निजी आकांक्षाओं के बीच उलझे हरिलाल का मन अस्वीकार से जूझता है और खुद की पहचान को लेकर भ्रमित होता है। शराब की लत, विवाह का असफल होना और आध्यात्मिक पथ से भटकाव हरिलाल के जीवन की कठिन राह को उजागर कर देते हैं। हरिलाल की कठिनाई दरअसल गांधी जैसे विशाल वटवृक्ष की छाया में बड़े होने का ताप है, जिसे वह सह नहीं पाता।
