Introduction
Fiza: In Search of Her Brother (2000) Written and directed by Khalid Mohamed and produced by Pradeep Guha, Fiza (2000) is a poignant family action-thriller exploring the enduring psychological consequences of communal violence. Set against the traumatic aftermath of the 1993 Mumbai riots, the film stars Karisma Kapoor in the titular role alongside Hrithik Roshan and Jaya Bachchan, with strong supporting performances by Manoj Bajpayee, Bikram Saluja, and Isha Koppikar. The narrative follows Fiza Ikramullah's relentless search for her missing brother, Amaan, who vanished during the violence. Upon finding him, she confronts profound moral dilemmas concerning familial loyalty and the human cost of extremism.
The plot revolves around Fiza (Karisma Kapoor) and her relentless quest to find her brother, Amaan (Hrithik Roshan). After six agonizing years of waiting alongside her grieving mother, Nishatbi (Jaya Bachchan), Fiza decides to take matters into her own hands. Aided by her supportive college friend, Anirudh (Bikram Saluja), she scours the country through legal, political, and personal channels. Her journey eventually leads her to the borders of Rajasthan, where she is devastated to discover that her traumatised brother has been radicalised by a manipulative terrorist leader, Murad Khan (Manoj Bajpayee), and has joined a militant cell. Though Fiza successfully convinces Amaan to abandon his weapons, leave his sweetheart Shehnaz (Shabana Raza) behind, and return home, his past and relentless law enforcement scrutiny shatter the family's brief peace. This culminates in a tragic finale where a cornered Amaan begs his sister to end his life to grant him an honourable release from a cycle of violence.
Filmed across India, Fiza is distinguished by Santosh Sivan's evocative cinematography and Sharmishta Roy's sombre production design. The acclaimed soundtrack was primarily composed by Anu Malik, with lyrics by Gulzar and Mehboob. A. R. Rahman declined scoring the entire film due to scheduling commitments but composed the iconic devotional track Piya Haji Ali. He recommended his associate Ranjit Barot for the background score. The album presents a diverse musical palette including romance, devotion, and popular dance tracks like Aaja Mahiya, Aankh Milaoongi, Tu Fiza Hai, and the glamorous Sunidi Chauhan rendered item number Mehboob Mere featuring Sushmita Sen. The album emerged as one of the year's biggest commercial successes, earning Malik a Filmfare nomination.
Released on 8 September 2000, Fiza received widespread critical acclaim for its sensitive engagement with communal conflict, compelling narrative, and powerful performances. Karisma Kapoor's portrayal was celebrated for its emotional depth and psychological complexity, while Jaya Bachchan received immense praise for her restrained performance as the grieving mother. Hrithik Roshan garnered deep appreciation for his nuanced depiction of a radicalised youth, earning a Filmfare Best Actor nomination.
The film was a major commercial success, grossing approximately ₹322 million worldwide. Out of seven Filmfare Award nominations, it won Best Actress for Karisma Kapoor and Best Supporting Actress for Jaya Bachchan, and was further honoured at the IIFA, Zee Cine, and Screen Awards for its social relevance.
कहानी फ़िज़ा (करिश्मा कपूर) और अपने भाई अमान (ऋतिक रोशन) को खोजने की उसकी लगातार कोशिशों के इर्द-गिर्द घूमती है। अपनी दुखी माँ निशातबी (जया बच्चन) के साथ छह साल तक तड़पते हुए इंतज़ार करने के बाद, फ़िज़ा मामले को ख़ुद अपने हाथों में लेने का फ़ैसला करती है। अपने कॉलेज़ के दोस्त अनिरुद्ध (विक्रम सलूजा) की मदद से, वह कानूनी, राजनीतिक और निजी तरीकों से पूरे देश में उसे ढूंढती है। उसका सफ़र उसे राजस्थान की सीमा तक ले जाता है, जहाँ उसे पता चलता है कि सदमे में डूबे उसके भाई को एक चालाक आतंकवादी नेता मुराद ख़ान (मनोज बाजपेयी) ने कट्टरपंथी बना दिया है और वह एक उग्रवादी गुट में शामिल हो गया है। हालाँकि फ़िज़ा अमान को हथियार छोड़ने, अपनी प्रेमिका शहनाज़ (शबाना रज़ा) को पीछे छोड़ने और घर लौटने के लिए मना लेती है, लेकिन उसका अतीत और कानून प्रवर्तन एजेंसियों की लगातार निगरानी परिवार की कुछ समय की शांति को ख़त्म कर देती है। कहानी का अंत दुखद होता है, जहाँ चारों तरफ़ से घिर जाने के बाद अमान अपनी बहन से गुज़ारिश करता है कि वह उसकी जान ले ले ताकि उसे हिंसा के चक्र से सम्मानजनक मुक्ति मिल सके।
भारत अलग-अलग जगहों पर शूट की गई फ़िल्म 'फ़िज़ा' अपनी ख़ास सिनेमैटोग्राफ़ी (संतोष सिवन) और गंभीर प्रोडक्शन डिज़ाइन (शर्मिष्ठा रॉय) के लिए जानी जाती है। इसके मशहूर संगीत को मुख्य रूप से अनु मलिक ने तैयार किया था, और गाने के बोल गुलज़ार और महबूब ने लिखे थे। ए. आर. रहमान ने समय की कमी के कारण पूरी फ़िल्म का संगीत देने से मना कर दिया था, लेकिन उन्होंने मशहूर भक्ति गीत 'पिया हाजी अली' ज़रूर कंपोज़ किया। उन्होंने बैकग्राउंड स्कोर (पार्श्व गायन) के लिए अपने सहयोगी रंजीत बारोट का नाम सुझाया। इस एल्बम में कई तरह के संगीत हैं, जैसे- रोमांस, भक्ति और लोकप्रिय डांस ट्रैक (जैसे 'आजा माहिया', 'आंख मिलाऊंगी', 'तू फ़िज़ा है') और सुनिधि चौहान की आवाज़ में सुष्मिता सेन पर फ़िल्माया गया ग्लैमरस आइटम नंबर 'महबूब मेरे'। यह एल्बम उस साल की सबसे बड़ी कमर्शियल सफलताओं में से एक रही और इसके लिए मलिक को फ़िल्मफ़ेयर नॉमिनेशन भी मिला।
