Introduction
Parichay (1972), produced by V.K. Sobti under the Tirupathi Pictures banner and directed by Gulzar, was inspired by the Hollywood classic The Sound of Music, starring Julie Andrews and Christopher Plummer. Although credited as being based on the Bengali novel Rangeen Uttarain by Raj Kumar Maitra, the film bore distinct similarities to the iconic American film. Starring Jeetendra, Jaya Bhaduri, and Sanjeev Kumar in prominent roles, the film's music, composed by Rahul Dev Burman, was one of its major highlights.
The story revolves around a dysfunctional family, where love is conspicuously absent between the members. It explores the consequences of a man's decisions to live life on his own terms, only to discover that his father's love came with conditions that forced him to sacrifice his choices. Pran played the role of the strict and no-nonsense retired Colonel Rai Saheb, who lives with his estranged five grandchildren. Despite their presence, he remains emotionally distant, especially after his son's death. It is only when a jobless man arrives at their home as a private tutor that Rai Saheb begins to understand the transformative power of love and its potential to restore harmony within the family.
The song Beeti Na Bitai Raina, sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Bhupendra, was a standout, though it was Mangeshkar who won the National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for her contribution to the duet. The other memorable track, Musafir Hoon Yaroon, sung by Kishore Kumar, was ranked #25 in the Binaca Geetmala annual list of 1973, and is still regarded as one of the most loved Hindi songs of all time.
Another notable piece was Sa Re Ke Sa Re, sung by Asha Bhosle and Kishore Kumar, which creatively referenced the solfège scale (Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La) popularized by Rodgers and Hammerstein in The Sound of Music. RD Burman and Gulzar adapted this technique to create a playful and educational song in which a tutor tries to engage and discipline his rebellious students while also teaching the nuances of Hindustani classical music.

परिचय (1972) को निर्माता वी.के. सोबती ने 'तिरुपति पिक्चर्स' के बैनर तले बनाया था। इस फ़िल्म के निर्देशक गुलज़ार थे। परिचय जूली एंड्रयूज़ और क्रिस्टोफ़र प्लमर की मुख्य भूमिकाओं वाली हॉलीवुड की क्लासिक फ़िल्म 'दि साउंड ऑफ़ म्यूज़िक' से प्रेरित थी। हालाँकि अधिकृत रूप से इसे राज कुमार मैत्र के लिखे बांग्ला उपन्यास 'रंगीन उत्तरन' पर आधारित कहा गया, लेकिन इस फ़िल्म की कई बातें क्लासिक अमेरिकी फ़िल्म से मिलती जुलती हैं। जीतेंद्र, जया भादुड़ी और संजीव कुमार की प्रमुख भूमिकाओं से सजी इस फ़िल्म की सबसे बड़ी ख़ासियतों में से एक संगीतकार राहुल देव बर्मन का दिया संगीत रहा।

पिता की ज़िन्दगी से चला जाता है। पर जब बेटे की असमय मृत्यु के बाद उसके बच्चे अपने इसी सख़्तजान दादाजी के पास रहने पहुँचते हैं, रिश्तों की डोर उलझ जाती है। फ़िल्म में अभिनेता प्राण ने सख़्त और कड़क सेवानिवृत्त कर्नल राय साहब की भूमिका निभाई है, जिसके पास उसके पाँचों पोते-पोती रहने के लिए पहुँचते हैं। वे साथ रहते तो हैं, लेकिन भावनात्मक स्तर पर उनमें अभी भी मीलों की दूरी है। दादा अपने पोते-पोतियों में मृत बेटे की छवि देखता है और चाहकर भी उसे माफ़ नहीं कर पाता। पर जब एक बेरोज़गार नौजवान उन बच्चों को पढ़ाने के लिए निजी शिक्षक बनकर आता है, राय साहब को प्रेम की परिवर्तनकारी शक्ति का अहसास होता है। इसी प्यार के सहारे वे परिवार के भीतर संबंधों की डोर वापस जुड़ती देखते हैं।
लता मंगेशकर और भूपेंद्र का गाया युगल गीत “बीते न बिताई रैना” फ़िल्म की उपलब्धि रहा। पर इस गीत के लिए सर्वश्रेष्ठ महिला पार्श्व गायिका का राष्ट्रीय फ़िल्म पुरस्कार लता ने जीता। किशोर कुमार का गाया फ़िल्म का दूसरा यादगार गीत "मुसाफिर हूं यारों" साल 1973 की बिनाका गीतमाला की वार्षिक सूची में पच्चीसवें स्थान रहा था और आज भी इसे उस दौर के पसंदीदा हिन्दी गीतों में से एक माना जाता है।
फ़िल्म का एक और लाजवाब गीत आशा भोंसले और किशोर कुमार का गाया "सा रे के सा रे" था 'दि साउंड ऑफ़ म्यूज़िक' की तरह ही संगीत की धुन पिरोने का
दिलचस्प प्रयोग किया गया था। पंचम और गुलज़ार यहाँ एक ऐसा चंचल और शिक्षाप्रद गीत रचा जिसमें एक शिक्षक अपने विद्रोही छात्रों को खेल खेल में ही हिंदुस्तानी शास्त्रीय संगीत की सरगम सिखाता है।
