Introduction

Chandidas (1934) is a social drama directed by Nitin Bose and produced by New Theatres Calcutta. It marked the studio's first major success. The film is a remake of the 1932 Bengali film of the same name, directed by Debaki Bose. The Hindi version starred K. L. Saigal, Uma Shashi, Pahari Sanyal, Nawab and H. Siddiqui.
The film tells the story of the 15th-century poet-saint Chandidas, a Vaishnavite poet whose life remains largely obscure but who was influential in shaping the ideas of the more documented Chaitanya (1486–1533). Chandidas, a school teacher, promoted the Vaishnavite ideology in Bengal through hymns centered on the Radha-Krishna legend. The film focuses on his defiance of the deep-seated social issues of caste discrimination, untouchability, and societal hypocrisy. At the heart of the story is his forbidden love for a low-caste washerwoman, Rami. The film's credits state it is "based on the life problems of the poet Chandidas—a problem India has not yet solved," referring to the caste divide in Indian society. Through this love story, the film emphasizes the poet's message of social reform.
The music for the film was composed by R. C. Boral, with lyrics by Agha Hashar Kashmiri. The soundtrack featured songs performed by K. L. Saigal, Pahari Sanyal, and Uma Shashi. Notably, Chandidas marked the first successful use of a "full-fledged orchestra" in Indian cinema. The iconic song "Prem Nagar Mein Banaoongi Ghar Main," sung by K. L. Saigal and Uma Shashi, became immensely popular and helped Saigal gain nationwide fame.

चंडीदास (1934) एक सामाजिक ड्रामा फ़िल्म थी जिसके निर्देशक नितिन बोस थे। इसे कलकत्ता के 'न्यू थियेटर्स' स्टूडियो के बैनर तले बनाया गया था। यह फ़िल्म स्टूडियो की पहली बड़ी कामयाबी साबित हुई। चंडीदास सन् 1932 में इसी नाम से बनी बांग्ला फिल्म का हिन्दी रीमेक थी। बांग्ला फ़िल्म का निर्देशन देबकी बोस ने किया था। हिन्दी फ़िल्म में कुंदन लाल सहगल, उमा शशि, पहाड़ी सान्याल, नवाब और एच. सिद्दीकी जैसे कलाकारों ने मुख्य भूमिकाएँ निभाई थीं।
फ़िल्म की कहानी पंद्रहवीं शताब्दी के भक्ति संत कवि चंडीदास के जीवन को केंद्र में रखती है। चंडीदास वैष्णव भक्त कवि थे। उनके जीवन के बारे में अधिक जानकारियाँ तो उपलब्ध नहीं है लेकिन उनके विचारों का चैतन्य महाप्रभु (1486-1533) के जीवन पर काफ़ी प्रभाव रहा ऐसा विश्वास है। चंडीदास पेशे से एक स्कूल शिक्षक थे जिन्होंने राधा-कृष्ण भक्ति और वैष्णव भक्ति परम्परा को अपने भजनों के माध्यम से पूरे बंगाल प्रदेश में प्रसारित किया। फ़िल्म की कहानी जातिभेद, छूआछूत और धार्मिक पाखंड के खिलाफ़ उनके संघर्ष को दिखाती है। फ़िल्म की कहानी एक तथाकथित निम्न मानी गई जाति की धोबिन रामी से उनके प्रेम को भी दिखाती है, जो उस समय के रूढ़िवादी समाज में वर्जित माना गया था।
फ़िल्म की शुरुआत में ही शीर्षक के साथ पर्दे पर यह भी लिखा आता है कि यह फ़िल्म “कवि चंडीदास के जीवन की समस्याओं पर आधारित है - एक ऐसी समस्या जिसे भारत आज तक सुलझा नहीं पाया है" साफ़ है कि फ़िल्म भारतीय समाज में पैठी जातिभेद की गहरी जड़ों की ओर इशारा कर रही है। जाति के भेद को तोड़ती प्रेम कहानी का चित्रण कर फ़िल्म चंडीदास अपना सामाजिक बदलाव का संदेश बखूबी पेश करती है।
फ़िल्म में संगीतकार आर. सी. बोराल ने संगीत दिया था और इसके लिए गीत उर्दू के महान लेखक आगा हश्र कश्मीरी ने लिखे थे। इन गीतों को कुंदन लाल सहगल, पहाड़ी सान्याल और उमा शशि जैसे अपने दौर के जाने-माने गायक-अभिनेताओं ने गाया था। चंडीदास ऐसी पहली भारतीय फ़िल्म थी जिसके गीतों के लिए 'संपूर्ण ऑर्केस्ट्रा' का सफलतापूर्वक इस्तेमाल हुआ। इस फ़िल्म में कुंदन लाल सहगल और उमा शशि का गाया चर्चित गीत "प्रेम नगर में बनाऊँगी घर मैं" बेहद लोकप्रिय हुआ और इसने सहगल को देशभर में मशहूर कर दिया।
