Introduction
The narrative follows Arvind Desai (Dilip Dhawan), the only son of a wealthy businessman (Sriram Lagoo) who trades in luxury handicrafts. Born into affluence, Arvind lacks both ambition and direction. His relationship with his father is deeply conflicted—he resents the latter's authoritarian personality yet is simultaneously fascinated by his power, wealth, and ruthless pragmatism. This contradiction mirrors Arvind's own internal confusion and ethical drift.
Arvind spends his time in intellectual discussions on art and politics with his Marxist friend Rajan (Om Puri), engaging more in debate than in action. He is romantically involved with Alice (Anjali Paigankar), his father's secretary, but treats the relationship casually, never considering its emotional consequences. He also occasionally seeks the company of a prostitute, Fatima, further underscoring his detachment and inability to form meaningful connections.
Despite his reluctance, Arvind is pressured into an arranged marriage with a woman from an elite, Westernized family recently returned from Paris. The arrangement devastates Alice and her mother, who bitterly recognize that Alice was merely a diversion in Arvind's privileged life. A brief cameo by Suresh Oberoi adds to the ensemble.
Throughout the film, Arvind remains restless and profoundly dissatisfied, searching for purpose but never committing himself to any belief, relationship, or vocation. His existential emptiness stands in stark contrast to the artisans who actually produce the luxury goods his father profits from—a contrast that culminates in the film's poignant closing moments, centred on craftsmen weaving carpets.
Arvind Desai Ki Ajeeb Dastaan was widely acclaimed for its introspective storytelling and socio-political commentary. At the 1979 Filmfare Awards, Saeed Akhtar Mirza received the Best Film (Critics' Choice) award, cementing the film's status as a landmark in socially conscious Indian cinema.
