Introduction

Angoor (1982) Widely regarded as one of the finest comedies in Hindi cinema, the film remains a benchmark in the tradition of cinematic farce. Directed by Gulzar, the film is an adaptation of the 1963 Bengali film Bhranti Bilas, itself based on Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar's novel of the same name, which drew inspiration from William Shakespeare's celebrated play The Comedy of Errors. The narrative had previously been adapted into Hindi as Do Dooni Chaar (1968) and has since inspired subsequent reinterpretations, including Rohit Shetty's Cirkus. Through a carefully structured narrative of mistaken identities and improbable coincidences, Gulzar transformed a classic literary premise into a distinctly Indian comic masterpiece.

The film stars Sanjeev Kumar and Deven Verma in memorable double roles, supported by a talented ensemble cast that includes Moushumi Chatterjee, Aruna Irani, Deepti Naval, Utpal Dutt, and Shammi. At the heart of the story are two pairs of identical twins who are separated during childhood and raised in different environments. Raj Tilak, portrayed by Utpal Dutt, travels with his twin sons, both named Ashok, and another pair of adopted twins, both named Bahadur. An unfortunate accident divides the family, leaving each branch with one Ashok and one Bahadur, setting the stage for the confusion that unfolds years later.

In adulthood, one Ashok is a respectable businessman married to Sudha, while his servant Bahadur is married to Prema. They live together with Sudha's younger sister, Tanu. Their orderly existence is disrupted when the other Ashok and Bahadur arrive in the same city. The second Ashok is an enthusiastic reader of detective novels, while his counterpart Bahadur possesses a carefree temperament and a fondness for bhang. The simultaneous presence of two identical Ashoks and two identical Bahadurs generates a cascade of misunderstandings involving family members, shopkeepers, taxi drivers, jewellers, and police officials. Rather than relying on slapstick excess, the film derives its humour from precise timing, witty dialogue, and the escalating absurdity of mistaken identities.

Upon its release, Angoor received widespread critical acclaim and emerged as a significant commercial success. Although produced on a modest budget and lacking the scale of contemporary blockbusters such as Disco Dancer and Vidhaata, the film achieved remarkable box-office returns and was considered a super-hit relative to its production costs. It also outperformed several high-profile releases of the period, including the Amitabh Bachchan-starrer Bemisaal.

The film's soundtrack, composed by R. D. Burman with lyrics by Gulzar, complemented its light-hearted tone. Songs such as Hothon Pe Beeti Baat, Roz Roz Dali Dali, and Preetam Aan Milo became memorable additions to the film's enduring appeal.

The film's critical reputation was further strengthened through recognition at the 30th Filmfare Awards. Deven Verma won the Best Comedian Award for his outstanding portrayal of the twin Bahadurs, while Sanjeev Kumar received a nomination for Best Actor for his accomplished double role. Although the award ultimately went to Dilip Kumar for Shakti, Angoor has continued to enjoy lasting acclaim and is frequently cited as one of the most accomplished and influential comedies in the history of Indian cinema.
