Introduction

Adhuri Kahani (1939) Directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi, the film explored themes of societal oppression and the tragic consequences of a woman's resistance against patriarchal norms. Featuring a notable cast—Durga Khote, Prithviraj Kapoor, Rose, Keshavrao Date, Ila Devi, Ishwarlal, and others—the film is especially remembered for the captivating performance of young Meena Kumari, then known as Baby Meena. The screenplay was written by Gunwantrai Acharya and J.S. Casshyap.

The story centres on Harbala (Durga Khote), a progressive woman stifled by her conservative husband, Seth Gopaldas (Keshavrao Date). Determined to provide a freer life for her children, Somnath (Prithviraj Kapoor) and Neelam (Rose), Harbala's efforts are crushed by her husband's rigid traditionalism. In despair, she takes her own life. Guilt-ridden, her children follow her in death. The title Adhuri Kahani, meaning “The Unfinished Tale,” hints at the hope for a more enlightened future.

The film features eleven songs composed by Gyan Dutt, including Aao Laalan Aao Ma Ki Godi Aao, Bhai Mori Laaj Bairan, and So Ja Lalna So Ja Maa Ki Godi Hai. Notably, all lead actors, including Durga Khote, Ishwarlal, Kapoor, Rose, and others, performed their own songs, a common feature at that time.

Despite its artistic merit and socially relevant themes, Adhuri Kahani did not succeed at the box office. Though some sources suggest it earned ₹58 crore worldwide, it is still widely regarded as a commercial failure. Nevertheless, it stands as one of Doshi's more accomplished early works at Ranjit Movietone, offering a poignant narrative well ahead of its time.

अधूरी कहानी (1939) का निर्देशन चतुर्भुज दोषी ने किया था। इस फ़िल्म की कहानी सामाजिक दमन और पितृसत्तात्मक परम्पराओं के विरुद्ध एक स्त्री के प्रतिरोध और उसके त्रासदी भरे अन्त को दिखाती है। इस फ़िल्म में दुर्गा खोटे, पृथ्वीराज कपूर, रोज़, केशवराव दाते, इला देवी, ईश्वरलाल जैसे उस दौर के नामी कलाकारों ने काम किया था। इन कलाकारों के अलावा इस फ़िल्म को उस समय बाल कलाकार की हैसियत से काम कर रहीं मीना कुमारी, जिन्हें तब 'बेबी मीना' के नाम से पुकारा जाता था, के प्रभावशाली अभिनय के लिए ख़ास तौर पर याद रखा जाता है। इस फ़िल्म की पटकथा गुणवंतराय आचार्य और जे.एस. कश्यप ने लिखी थी।
फ़िल्म की कहानी हरबाला (दुर्गा खोटे) नामक स्त्री किरदार के इर्द-गिर्द घूमती है। हरबाला एक प्रगतिशील सोच रखनेवाली वाली स्त्री है। लेकिन अपने रूढ़िवादी पति सेठ गोपालदास (केशवराव दाते) की दकियानूसी सोच के साये तले उसका दम घुटता है। हरबाला अपने दोनों बच्चों सोमनाथ (पृथ्वीराज कपूर) और नीलम (रोज़) को एक आज़ाद ज़िन्दगी देना चाहती है लेकिन उसकी यह कोशिश उसके पति की कठोर रूढ़िवादी मानसिकता के कारण कामयाब नहीं हो पाती। निराशा में वह आत्महत्या कर लेती है। अपराधबोध से ग्रस्त उसके बच्चे भी उसी का अनुसरण करते हैं और मौत को गले लगाना चुनते हैं। इस फ़िल्म का शीर्षक अधूरी कहानी फ़िल्म के निराशा से भरे अन्त से आगे जाकर एक ऐसे भविष्य की ओर इशारा है जो अधिक प्रबुद्ध और संवेदनशील हो सकता है।
इस फ़िल्म में ज्ञान दत्त द्वारा संगीतबद्ध कुल ग्यारह गीत थे जिनमें “आओ ललन आओ माँ की गोदी आओ”, “भाई मोरी लाज बैरन” और “सो जा ललन सो जा माँ की गोदी है” जैसे गीत बाद में भी याद किये गए। ख़ास बात यह है कि उस दौर के चलन के अनुसार फ़िल्म में पार्श्वगायन का इस्तेमाल नहीं था और दुर्गा खोटे, ईश्वरलाल, पृथ्वीराज कपूर, रोज़ सहित सभी प्रमुख कलाकारों ने अपने गीत खुद ही गाए थे।
कलात्मक स्तर पर बेहतर होने और एक प्रासंगिक सामाजिक संदेश को कथानक में पिरोने के बावजूद अधूरी कहानी टिकट खिड़की पर कामयाब नहीं रही। हालाँकि कुछ स्रोतों के अनुसार इसने वैश्विक स्तर पर 58 करोड़ रुपए की कमाई की थी, फिर भी इसे एक व्यावसायिक विफलता माना जाता है। पर यह फ़िल्म निर्देशक चतुर्भुज दोषी और 'रंजीत मूवीटोन' स्टूडियो द्बारा निर्मित शुरुआती दौर की सबसे उम्दा रचनाओं में से एक गिनी जाती है जिसकी कहानी अपने समय से आगे जाकर दर्शकों से मार्मिक संवाद करती है।
