Adhuri Kahani (1939) Directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi, the film explored themes of societal oppression and the tragic consequences of a woman's resistance against patriarchal norms. Featuring a notable cast—Durga Khote, Prithviraj Kapoor, Rose, Keshavrao Date, Ila Devi, Ishwarlal, and others—the film is especially remembered for the captivating performance of young Meena Kumari, then known as Baby Meena. The screenplay was written by Gunwantrai Acharya and J.S. Casshyap. The story centres on Harbala (Durga Khote), a progressive woman stifled by her conservative husband, Seth Gopaldas (Keshavrao Date). Determined to provide a freer life for her children, Somnath (Prithviraj Kapoor) and Neelam (Rose), Harbala's efforts are crushed by her husband's rigid traditionalism.
