Introduction

Aankhen (2002) was a heist thriller directed by Vipul Amrutlal Shah, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Akshay Kumar, Arjun Rampal, Sushmita Sen, Paresh Rawal, and Aditya Pancholi. An adaptation of Shah's own Gujarati play Andhalo Pato (Blindman's Buff), the film was lauded for its unique thematic approach and gripping storyline.
Amitabh Bachchan played Vijay Singh Rajput, a hard-working but volatile bank employee who, after being unjustly fired, seeks revenge by orchestrating a heist. He enlists three blind men (played by Kumar, Rampal, and Rawal) to rob the bank, believing their disability will shield them from suspicion. Bachchan's portrayal of the vengeful character received widespread acclaim.
The film performed well at the Indian box office, grossing ₹338 million, making it the fifth-highest-grossing Bollywood film of 2002. It also saw success in South Africa, where it earned $14,600 on its opening weekend despite a limited release. Aankhen premiered internationally at the 3rd IIFA Awards in Malaysia on April 5, 2002, and was praised for its innovative concept, direction, and narrative.
Years after its release, two bank robberies in Maharashtra, carried out by Feroz Sheikh and his accomplices, were reportedly inspired by the film. The culprits confessed to watching Aankhen multiple times to plan the heist.
A sequel was first announced in 2006, with Shah initially attached as director. However, he was replaced due to creative differences. Anees Bazmee later confirmed the finalization of the cast, which included Saif Ali Khan and Jacqueline Fernandez alongside Amitabh Bachchan. Ultimately, director Abhinay Deo confirmed in 2023 that the project had been shelved after Bachchan opted out of the sequel.

आँखें (2002) के निर्देशक विपुल अमृतलाल शाह थे। यह एक बैंक डकैती पर बनी रोमांचक फ़िल्म थी जिसमें अमिताभ बच्चन, अक्षय कुमार, अर्जुन रामपाल, सुष्मिता सेन, परेश रावल और आदित्य पंचोली ने मुख्य भूमिकाएँ निभाई थीं। आँखें में निर्देशक विपुल शाह ने अपने ही गुजराती नाटक 'अंधालो पाटो' को फ़िल्म माध्यम में रूपांतरित किया था। फ़िल्म को इसकी अनूठी कहानी और दिलचस्प रोमांच से भरे कथानक कहने के तरीके के चलते खूब पसन्द किया गया।
फ़िल्म में अमिताभ बच्चन एक जज़्बाती बैंक कर्मचारी विजय सिंह राजपूत की भूमिका में है जो गलत तरीके से नौकरी से निकाले जाने पर उसी बैंक में डाला डालकर बदला लेने की योजना बनाता है। पर कहानी में ट्विस्ट ये है कि राजपूत बैंक लूटने के लिए तीन अंधे लोगों (अक्षय कुमार, अर्जुन रामपाल और परेश रावल) को चुनता है और उन्हें अभ्यास करवाता है। उसका मानना है कि डकैती के बाद इन तीनों का अंधा होना ही उनकी बेगुनाही का सबूत बन जायेगा। बदला लेने को आतुर इस डाँवाडोल से किरदार के पूरे आवेग के साथ चित्रण के लिए अमिताभ बच्चन को खूब सराहा गया।
फ़िल्म ने भारतीय सिनेमाघरों में अच्छा प्रदर्शन किया और 33 करोड़ रुपये से अधिक की कमाई की। यह साल 2002 की पाँचवीं सबसे ज़्यादा कमाई करने वाली हिन्दी फ़िल्म थी। इसे दक्षिण अफ्रीका में भी सफ़लता मिली जहाँ सीमित रिलीज़ के बावजूद इसने शुरुआती सप्ताहांत में ही 14,600 डॉलर से ज़्यादा की कमाई की। अंतरराष्ट्रीय स्तर पर आँखें का प्रीमियर 5 अप्रैल, 2002 को मलेशिया में आयोजित तीसरे आईफ़ा पुरस्कारों में हुआ। वहाँ भी इसको कहानी में नई सोच और उम्दा निर्देशन के लिए तारीफ़ें मिलीं।
फ़िल्म की रिलीज़ के कई साल बाद महाराष्ट्र में हुई दो बैंक डकैतियों के सिलसिले में फ़िल्म का नाम फिर चर्चा में आया। डकैती के आरोपी फ़िरोज शेख़ और उसके साथियों ने अपने बयान में यह कबूल किया कि डकैतियों की योजना बनाते हुए उन्होंने कई बार आँखें फ़िल्म देखी थी।
पहली बार जब साल 2006 में फ़िल्म के सीक्वल की घोषणा की गई थी, तब निर्देशक के तौर पर विपुल शाह का ही नाम था। लेकिन बाद में रचनात्मक मतभेदों के चलते उन्हें परियोजना से अलग कर दिया गया। बाद में अनीस बज़्मी ने सीक्वल में अमिताभ बच्चन के साथ सैफ़ अली खान और जैक्लिन फर्नांडिस को लेने की बात की थी। पर निर्देशक अभिनय देव ने वर्ष 2023 में इस बात की पुष्टि की कि अमिताभ बच्चन के इस सीक्वल से अलग होने के बाद यह पूरी परियोजना निरस्त हो गई।
