Introduction
Aandhiyan (1952), the third film produced by the fabled Navketan banner set up by Dev Anand and his elder brother Chetan Anand in the late 1940s, was directed by the latter with the former playing the male lead opposite his future wife Kalpana Kartik. The plot of the film centred on a lawyer and his relationship with the daughter of a debt-ridden man who is pressurised by a manipulative creditor to give the girl's hand in marriage to him. Aandhiyan is particularly noteworthy for launching classical music doyen Ustad Ali Akbar Khan's career as a composer for films. The maestro subsequently scored the music for films like Ritwik Ghatak's Ajantrik, Satyajit Ray's Devi, Tapan Sinha's Jhinder Bandi and Kshudita Pashan and James Ivory's The Householder. On the music of Aandhiyan, the Ustad worked with sitarist Pandit Ravi Shankar and flautist Pandit Pannalal Ghosh, both of whom were disciples of his father, Ustad Allaudin Khan of the Maihar gharana.
आंधियाँ (1952) फ़िल्म 1940 के दशक में देव आनंद और उनके बड़े भाई चेतन आनंद द्वारा स्थापित प्रसिद्ध फ़िल्म निर्माण संस्था नवकेतन के बैनर तले निर्मित तीसरी फ़िल्म थी। इसका निर्देशन बड़े भाई विजय आनंद ने किया था और देव आनंद इसके नायक थे। नायिका की भूमिका में उनकी भावी पत्नी कल्पना कार्तिक थीं। फ़िल्म की कहानी एक ईमानदार नौजवान वकील राम (देव आनंद) और उसकी चाहत जानकी (कल्पना कार्तिक) के बीच प्यार के रिश्ते में आई बाधाओं के इर्द-गिर्द घूमती है। जानकी के पिता लाला दीनदयाल भारी कर्ज़ में डूबे हैं। उन्हें कर्ज़ देनेवाले रईस कुबेरदास (के.एन. सिंह) की भी जानकी पर बुरी नज़र है। वो लाला दीनदयाल के सामने शर्त रख देता है कि या तो वो अपनी सारी जायदाद बेचकर उसका कर्ज़ चुकाये या फिर अपनी खूबसूरत बेटी का हाथ उसके हाथ में दे दे। आंधियाँ को ख़ास तौर पर इसलिए भी याद किया जाता है कि शास्त्रीय संगीत के दिग्गज उस्ताद अली अकबर खान की फ़िल्मों में संगीतकार के रूप में करियर की शुरुआत इसी फ़िल्म से हुई थी। इसके बाद उस्ताद ने कई और फ़िल्मों में संगीत दिया जिनमें ऋत्विक घटक की अजांत्रिक, सत्यजित राय की देवी, तपन सिन्हा की झिंदर बंदी और क्षुदिता पाषाण तथा जेम्स आइवरी की दि हाउसहोल्डर जैसी फ़िल्में प्रमुख हैं। उस्ताद अली अकबर खान ने आंधियाँ के लिए संगीत रचना के दौरान सितार वादक पंडित रविशंकर और बांसुरी वादक पंडित पन्नालाल घोष के साथ काम किया। भारतीय शास्त्रीय संगीत के ये दोनों भावी सितारे उस दौर में 'मैहर घराने' के तहत संगीत दीक्षा ले रहे थे और अली अकबर खान के पिता उस्ताद अलाउद्दीन खान के शिष्य हुआ करते थे।
