Introduction

Aakhree Raasta (1986) was a Hindi remake of the Tamil drama Oru Kaidhiyin Diary, originally scripted by the celebrated actor Bhagyaraj and directed by Bharathiraja. Both the Hindi adaptation and direction were handled by K. Bhagyaraj. Produced under the banner of Lakshmi Productions (Madras) Pvt. Ltd. by T. Rama Rao and A. Purnachandra Rao, the film stars Amitabh Bachchan in a dual role, with Jaya Prada, Sridevi, and Anupam Kher in significant supporting roles. Notably, Sridevi, who was not fluent in Hindi at the time, had her voice dubbed by Rekha for the film.
The film's compelling storyline blends romance, betrayal, revenge, and intense courtroom drama. It centres around David (played by Amitabh Bachchan), who is wrongfully convicted of murdering his wife Mary (Jaya Prada). A conspiracy involving a politician (Sadashiv Amrapurkar), a doctor (Bharat Kapoor), and a policeman (Dalip Tahil) sends David to prison for 24 years. His child is left in the custody of his best friend (Anupam Kher). The rest of the film follows David's quest for vengeance, and his complex relationship with his estranged son, now adopted by a police officer.
At the time of signing this film, Bachchan's career was going through a rough patch, with several of his films failing at the box office. Aakhree Raasta marked a turning point for him, as it became a major hit upon release in 1986, drawing large audiences to theatres. His portrayal of a dual role was widely praised and is considered one of his finest performances. One of the standout songs from the film, Gori ka saajan… saajan ki gori, sung by S. Janaki and Mohammad Aziz, became an instant hit and remains a chartbuster to this day.
The film is fondly remembered as a defining moment in Amitabh Bachchan's illustrious career, providing a much-needed box-office success after a series of setbacks.

आख़िरी रास्ता (1986) तमिल फ़िल्म ओरु कैधीयिन डायरी का हिन्दी भाषा में रूपांतर थी। तमिल में इसकी मूल पटकथा प्रसिद्ध अभिनेता कृष्णास्वामी भाग्यराज ने लिखी थी और इसके निर्देशक भारतीराजा थे। फ़िल्म के हिंदी रूपांतर और हिन्दी फ़िल्म के निर्देशन का ज़िम्मा खुद मूल तमिल फ़िल्म के लेखक के. भाग्यराज ने संभाला। इसका निर्माण टी. रामा राव और ए. पूर्णचंद्र राव की 'लक्ष्मी प्रोडक्शंस (मद्रास) प्राइवेट लिमिटेड' के बैनर तले किया गया था। फ़िल्म में अमिताभ बच्चन दोहरी भूमिका में हैं और जया प्रदा, श्रीदेवी, अनुपम खेर ने दूसरी प्रमुख भूमिकाएँ निभाई हैं। फ़िल्म से जुड़ा एक दिलचस्प तथ्य ये भी है कि श्रीदेवी उस समय तक हिन्दी बोलने में पूरी तरह से पारंगत नहीं हो पायी थीं और इस फ़िल्म के लिए उनके हिन्दी संवाद रेखा से डब करवाए गए थे।
इस फ़िल्म की घटनाओं से भरी घुमावदार कहानी में रोमांस भी है तो विश्वासघात भी, नाच-गाना है तो बदले की कहानी भी। साथ में रोमांच से भरी अदालती कार्रवाही का प्रसंग कहानी को और आकर्षक बना देता है। फ़िल्म की कहानी मुख्य किरदार डेविड (अमिताभ बच्चन) के इर्द-गिर्द घूमती है। डेविड पर उसकी खुद की पत्नी मैरी (जया प्रदा) की हत्या का झूठा आरोप लगाकर उसे जेल भेज दिया जाता है। उसके खिलाफ़ रची इस साजिश में एक राजनेता (सदाशिव अमरापुरकर), एक डॉक्टर (भरत कपूर) और एक पुलिसवाले (दलीप ताहिल) की
मिलीभगत है। अदालत डेविड को 24 साल की सज़ा सुनाती है। उसका बेटा उसके सबसे अच्छे दोस्त (अनुपम खेर) की निगहबानी में छूट जाता है। फ़िल्म आगे डेविड के 24 साल बाद जेल से छूटकर बदला लेने की कहानी के साथ आगे बढ़ती है। बदले की इस कहानी में वृद्ध अमिताभ का अब पुलिस इंस्पेक्टर बन चुके अपने जवान बेटे (दोहरी भूमिका में अमिताभ) से टकराव भी बहुत रोमांचक और दिलचस्प है।
जब अमिताभ बच्चन ने इस फ़िल्म को साइन किया था तब उनके फ़िल्मी करियर का मुश्किल दौर चल रहा था। एक के बाद एक उनकी कई फ़िल्में टिकट खिड़की पर असफल साबित हुई थीं। आख़िरी रास्ता उनके लिए एक ख़ास फ़िल्म साबित हुई। इसी फ़िल्म की कामयाबी ने 1986 में उनकी किस्मत को पलटा और दर्शक उन्हें देखने सिनेमाघरों में खिंचे चले आये। बाप-बेटे की दोहरी भूमिका में उनके अभिनय को खूब सराहा गया और इसे उनके बेहतरीन कामों में से एक गिना गया।
एस. जानकी और मौहम्मद अज़ीज़ का गाया फ़िल्म का एक गाना "गोरी का साजन, साजन की गोरी" तो उन दिनों बहुत ही लोकप्रिय हुआ और आज भी इसे सुना जाता है। आख़िरी रास्ता अमिताभ बच्चन के चमकदार अभिनय करियर में एक महत्वपूर्ण मील के पत्थर के रूप में याद की जाती है, क्योंकि इसी के साथ उन्होंने व्यावसायिक
रूप से असफल फ़िल्मों की एक लम्बी शृंखला को कामयाबी के साथ तोड़ दिया था।
