Introduction
Akash Deep (1965), directed by Phani Majumdar, features a stellar ensemble cast including Dharmendra, Mehmood, Ashok Kumar, Nanda, and Nimmi. Despite its talented lineup, the film falters due to a meandering plot, overcrowded with characters and events that often feel disjointed and unrelated to the central narrative. Adapted from Nabendu Ghosh's screenplay, the story—penned by Majumdar himself—becomes a muddled affair that is more bewildering than engaging.

आकाशदीप (1965) के निर्देशक फणी मजूमदार थे। यह फ़िल्म धर्मेंद्र, महमूद, अशोक कुमार, नंदा और निम्मी जैसे बेहतरीन सितारों के अभिनय से सजी थी। इतने प्रभावशाली कलाकारों के होने के बावजूद यह फ़िल्म अपने कथानक की कमज़ोरी के कारण लड़खड़ा जाती है। कथानक में ऐसे ढेरों किरदार और घटनाएँ भर दी गई हैं जो मुख्य कथा से खुद को ठीक से जोड़ भी नहीं पातीं। खुद फणी जूमदार की कहानी पर नबेंदु घोष की लिखी पटकथा में इतने घुमावदार पेंच हैं कि वो देखनेवाले की दिलचस्पी जगाने के बजाए उसे भ्रम में अधिक डालती है।
फ़िल्म की कहानी शंकर (अशोक कुमार) के किरदार के साथ आगे बढ़ती है। शंकर ने अपने पिता की मुफ़लिसी से भरी मौत देखी है और वो किसी भी तरह इस गरीबी के चक्र से निजात पाना चाहता है। अपनी लगन और मेहनत के दम पर वो एक कामयाब मिल का मालिक बन जाता है। पर इसके बिल्कुल उलट उसके भाई मधु (महमूद) का जीवन है, जो अपने स्वर्गीय पिता की चाय की दुकान चलाने का फ़ैसला करता है और सादा जीवन चुनता है। दोनों भाइयों के किरदारों बीच के इस द्वैध में ही फ़िल्म की कहानी का मूल तनाव छिपा है, लेकिन फ़िल्म अनेक असंगत लगती उपकथाओं और किरदारों की भरमार से मूल कथा का असर नष्ट कर देती है।
पर संगीतकार चित्रगुप्त का संगीत इस फ़िल्म की यादगार उपलब्धि है, ख़ासकर लता मंगेशकर का गाया बेहद खूबसूरत और मार्मिक गीत "दिल का दिया जला के गया" भुलाया नहीं जा सकता। दूसरे उल्लेखनीय गानों में मोहम्मद रफ़ी का गाया "मुझे दर्द-ए-दिल का पता न था" और लता मंगेशकर का गाया "मिले तो फिर झुके नहीं नज़र वही प्यार की" याद किए जा सकते हैं। ये गीत आज भी चाहनेवालों के दिलों में जगह बनाए हुए हैं।
