Introduction

Aaj Ka Hindustan (1940), directed by Jayant Desai, is a notable film in the history of Indian cinema. Starring Prithviraj Kapoor, Rose, Ishwarlal, Sitara Devi, and comedian Charlie, this film was produced by Movietone and tells the story of two brothers—one a staunch nationalist (played by Prithviraj Kapoor), and the other a traitor. The film delves into themes of loyalty, patriotism, and the internal conflicts that mirror the nation's struggles at the time.

The film's main attraction was its lead Prithviraj Kapoor, the patriarch of the Kapoor family. Kapoor holds a unique place in the history of Hindi cinema. With four generations of his family contributing to the film industry, his legacy has left an indelible mark. His own journey began in the silent film era, and he went on to play a supporting role in India's first talkie, Alam Ara (1931). Known for his exceptional versatility, Kapoor was equally at home on stage as he was in front of the camera, honing his craft in both mediums. His dedication to the performing arts made him also join the Grant Anderson Theater Company during its stay in Bombay.

As a respected figure in Indian cinema, Prithviraj Kapoor's contributions were acknowledged by the Government of India, which awarded him the prestigious Padma Bhushan in 1969 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1971. His performances, particularly in films like Aaj Ka Hindustan, and later in Sikandar and the iconic Mughal- E-Azam to name a few, helped elevate him to stardom and solidified his position as one of the foremost actors of his time. The success of Aaj Ka Hindustan was one of many triumphs in his career, helping to cement his place as a leading figure in the industry.

Kapoor's influence continues to resonate today, with his descendants—his son Raj Kapoor and grandsons like Randhir Kapoor, Rishi Kapoor, and Kareena Kapoor Khan—remaining key players in Bollywood, ensuring the enduring legacy of the Kapoor family in Indian cinema.
