भारतीय सिनेमा की सम्मानित उपस्थिति पृथ्वीराज कपूर के कला क्षेत्र में विस्तृत योगदान को रेखांकित करते हुए भारत सरकार उन्हें 1969 में प्रतिष्ठित पद्म भूषण सम्मान और 1971 में दादा साहब फाल्के पुरस्कार से सम्मानित किया। आज का हिंदुस्तान से लेकर सिकंदर (1941) और बाद में यादगार फ़िल्म मुग़ल-ए-आज़म (1960) में उनके दमदार अभिनय ने उन्हें सितारा हैसियत तक पहुँचा दिया और वे अपने दौर के शीर्ष अभिनेताओं की सूची में शुमार होने लगे। आज का हिंदुस्तान की कामयाबी उनके अभिनय करियर में एक मील का पत्थर थी।
पृथ्वीराज कपूर के बेटे राज कपूर, शशि कपूर और शम्मी कपूर तथा बाद में उनके परिवार की तीसरी पीढ़ी और चौथी पीढ़ी में हुए पोते-पड़पोते और पड़पोतियाँ जैसे रणधीर कपूर, ऋषि कपूर और करिश्मा कपूर, करीना कपूर खान, रणवीर कपूर आदि आज भी हिन्दी सिनेमा के सबसे ख़ास चमकते सितारे बने हुए हैं और
भारतीय सिनेमा में कपूर खानदान की विरासत मज़बूती के साथ आगे बढ़ रही है।
