Zakhm1998
Introduction
Zakhm (Wound, 1998) Written and directed by Mahesh Bhatt and produced by Mahesh and Pooja Bhatt, the film stands as one of the most searingly personal works in Bhatt's filmography. It features Ajay Devgn in the lead role, with pivotal performances by Kunal Khemu, Pooja Bhatt, Sonali Bendre, and Nagarjuna.
Rooted in lived experience, Zakhm draws inspiration from the life of Bhatt's mother, Shirin Mohammad Ali, whose character is portrayed on screen by his daughter, Pooja Bhatt. The narrative is deeply informed by Bhatt's own emotional history and his fraught, intimate relationship with his mother, unfolding against the incendiary backdrop of the 1992 Mumbai riots. Ajay Devgn essays the role of the son—an unmistakable alter ego of the filmmaker—through whom the film interrogates themes of forbidden love, fractured identity, maternal devotion, and the corrosive impact of communal violence.
The film's music was composed by M. M. Keeravani, with lyrics by the legendary Anand Bakshi, and released under the His Master's Voice label. Notably, Keeravani had originally chosen K. S. Chithra to sing Gali Mein Aaj Chaand Nikla; however, for reasons that remain unclear, the song was ultimately recorded by Alka Yagnik. The soundtrack features the memorable songs Gali Mein Aaj Chaand Nikla, Hum Yahan Tum Yahan, Raat Saari Bekaraari Mein, Padh Likh Ke, and the evocative Maa Ne Kaha. The songs were rendered by an accomplished ensemble of singers, including Alka Yagnik, Kumar Sanu, M. M. Keeravani, and K. S. Chithra, whose performances contributed significantly to the album's enduring appeal.
Critically acclaimed, Zakhm was honoured with the Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration. Ajay Devgn's haunting portrayal earned him his first National Film Award for Best Actor, a triumph he also replicated at the 1999 Screen Awards. Additionally, Mahesh Bhatt received the Filmfare Award for Outstanding Film of the Year (1999), cementing Zakhm's stature as a landmark film—both a personal confession and a resonant commentary on a fractured nation.
