Writing on the Earth2005
Introduction
Body of Work
A man and a woman are delighted by the arrival of a child. But the child is stillborn and the man is inconsolable. He cannot imagine that there is no divine reason for such a tragic event. As he observes the children in his village, he concludes that God wanted to protect his child from earthly vulgarities. And that God has now called upon him to help: he has to kill all the children in the village in order to protect them from the evil nature of the world.
With his expressionist camera, Ghasemi takes the viewer on a hysterical mission of the fool who is unable to escape his own logic. Made in a delirious, expressionist style, Writing on the Earth refers to the prophecy that 'the earth and sky are writings from God'. But there are some who misunderstand the message, such as the crazed child-killer who kills in the name of God – a damning condemnation of religious fanaticism and violence.
