हालाँकि इस फ़िल्म का सटीक कथानक आज उपलब्ध नहीं है लेकिन यह माना जा सकता है कि विष कन्या एक नाटकीय उतार-चढ़ावों से भरी कथा थी जिसमें विषकन्या के इस पौराणिक मिथक को कथानक में पिरोया गया है। फ़िल्म की कहानी निशा नामक एक युवती के साथ आगे बढ़ती है। यही निशा फ़िल्म में अपने माता-पिता की हत्या का बदला लेने के लिए विषकन्या बनती है। एक कथानक के बतौर यह एक क्लासिकल प्रतिशोध कथा लगती है जिसमें पौराणिक रूढ़ि के रहस्य और जज़्बाती उफ़ान को जोड़ा गया है।

इस फ़िल्म का संगीत भी यादगार रहा। फ़िल्म के कुछ प्रमुख यादगार गीत थे गौतमी तडिमल्ला का गाया "लड़ा कर आँख अब पछता रहे हैं" और “वो चाँद बनकर मुस्कुरा रहे हैं” तथा सुरेंद्र का गाया "प्रीत की ज्योत जलाकर चुप है" जैसे गीत।
