Body of Work

Today and Tomorrow, produced by Rotana Audio Visual which is chaired by HRH Prince Alwaleed bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Alsoud is the first feature film to come out of Saudi Arabia, even if the director is Palestinian living in Canada. Billed as a social drama and a romantic comedy, it puts forward several controversial questions regarding 'social oppression', the lives of Saudi women and secret romances, and often appears as a political statement. It reflects the dilemma faced by Saudi families trapped in the 'modernity' vs. 'tradition' dilemma. The film tells the story of a woman named Duniya, sister of the main character Sahar, who wants to have her own identity and build up a career even as her brother plans to get her married. It is noteworthy that this is the first time that Saudi actors and actresses star in a feature film. In Saudi soap operas, actresses are always hired from other Arab countries.
