A River Named Titas is a Bangladeshi production, made shortly after the country's independence. It is the story of the life and ultimate dissolution of a fishing community known as the Malos, on the banks of the river Titas. It lyrically records the rhythm, life pattern, and rituals of the community in a documentary manner. Interspersed with this are episodes from the lives of the characters: Kishore falls in love and marries a girl only to lose her to river-bandits, and then goes mad. She is rescued by sympathetic fishermen, with whom she lives and raises her child. She also begins to take care of a madman but ironically, only recognises him as her husband before their death. Another woman, Basanti, adopts the child as the world of the fisher-folk begins to totter around her. Petty officials from the city come and take over the land as the fishermen are driven out, leaving a drying river behind…
