Body of Work

Arif, an army jawan, marries Gudiya, but their happiness lasts a mere ten days. The Kargil war between India and Pakistan breaks out, and Arif has to go to the front. His mother and wife are very proud of him. When the war is over, they wait for him to return. But Arif is missing in battle, and later declared a deserter by the army. The family can hardly bear the stigma. Four years go by, and all hope for his return fades. Given that Gudiya was married for a short while, she is now married off again, to her cousin, Taufiq. Taufiq loves her, they seem to be happy together, and two years later Gudiya is expecting their child. And then Arif, who had been a POW in Pakistan, returns — as a hero! And he wants his wife back because he had not divorced her. As per the Shariat law Gudiya has to go Arif. But she is legally married to Taufiq and even carrying his child. The film, which is based on a true story, throws up some important emotional, legal and religious questions.
