Syndromes and a Century2006
Introduction
Body of Work
Syndromes and a Century, a tribute to the director's parents, is divided into two parts which sometimes echo each other. The characters and dialogue in the second half are essentially the same as in the first, but the settings and outcome of the stories are different. The first part is set in a hospital in rural Thailand and focuses on a woman doctor, while the second half is set in a Bangkok medical centre and focuses on a male doctor. The two central characters are inspired by the filmmaker's parents, in the years before they became lovers. Created as a part of the New Crowned Hope Festival, which the city of Vienna funded to mark the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth, Syndromes and a Century bridges the gap between avant-garde and narrative forms.
