Introduction

Suhani Sadak (1973) A black-and-white documentary short directed by the renowned filmmaker Shyam Benegal and produced by the Films Division of India has a succinct runtime of just two minutes. The film serves as a civic appeal urging citizens to maintain cleanliness in their cities and public spaces. Despite its brevity, the film reflects Benegal's hallmark commitment to social consciousness and public engagement.
Shyam Benegal, widely regarded as a pioneering force in Indian parallel cinema, emerged as one of the most influential and visionary filmmakers of post-1970s Indian cinema. His work, characterised by its deep-rooted social realism and powerful narrative style, challenged mainstream cinematic conventions and introduced a new idiom in Indian filmmaking. Over the course of his illustrious career, Benegal has received numerous accolades, including eighteen National Film Awards, a Filmfare Award, and a Nandi Award. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to Indian cinema, he was conferred with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2005.
In line with his broader cinematic ethos, Suhani Sadak embodies Benegal's dedication to addressing pressing societal issues through the medium of film. Like many of his documentaries and feature films, this short piece aims to provoke thought, inspire civic responsibility, and raise awareness among the general public about everyday social concerns, in this case, urban hygiene and public cleanliness.
It is important to note that there is no documented evidence indicating that Suhani Sadak received major Indian film awards such as the National Film Award or the Filmfare Award. This absence should not be viewed as a reflection of its significance or impact. As a state-commissioned documentary with a specific public service mandate, the film's primary objective was likely educational and advocacy-oriented, rather than focused on competitive recognition. Its value lies in its intent and societal message rather than in accolades.
