Introduction
Solva Saal, directed by Raj Khosla, is a heartwarming romantic comedy film starring Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman. The film marks Khosla's third collaboration with Anand, following the success of Milap and C.I.D., and draws inspiration from classic Hollywood, particularly Frank Capra's It Happened One Night. However, it is not an out and out imitation of the Hollywood version, but an indigenous take on it. The film carved its own Indian identity with sensibilities deeply in congruence with the Indian audience, such as a performance of Marathi folk dance form Lavni, during which Waheeda Rehman remains a spectator and Dev Anand dances with the folk dancers to the beat of dholak.
Waheeda Rehman, in one of her early lead roles, plays Laaj, meaning 'shame', a naive college student who, in a moment of rebellion, attempts to elope with her boyfriend. However, when her deceitful lover steals her expensive necklace and abandons her, Laaj is left stranded in Bombay with only hours to recover the stolen jewelry and return home before her father wakes up. Enter Pran Nath, played by Dev Anand, a quick-witted journalist who offers to help her track down the conman, leading to a series of amusing misadventures across the city.
The film's second half, filled with delightful twists and turns, features lively musical numbers composed by S.D. Burman and playful sequences set in a film studio, with Khosla making a comedic cameo appearance as a film director.
अपने अभिनय के सफ़र की शुरुआती मुख्य भूमिकाओं में से एक में वहीदा रहमान ने यहाँ लाज का किरदार निभाया है। अपने नाम के अनुरूप ही लाज एक भोली कॉलेज छात्रा है, जो अचानक किसी विद्रोही पल में अपने प्रेमी के साथ घर छोड़कर भागने का फ़ैसला करती है। पर जब उसका धोखेबाज प्रेमी उसका महँगा हार चुराकर उसे धोखा देकर भाग जाता है तो लाज मुम्बई शहर में अकेली रह जाती है। अब उसे पिता के जागने से पहले घर वापस लौटना है और उसके पास चोरी किए गए अपने गहने वापस हासिल करने के लिए सिर्फ़ कुछ घंटे की मोहलत बाक़ी है। ठीक यहाँ कहानी में एंट्री होती है हमारे हीरो प्राण नाथ (देव आनंद) की, जो एक तेज-तर्रार पत्रकार है। प्राण नाथ लाज को उस ठग का पता लगाने में मदद की पेशकश करता है। उन दोनों का यह खोज अभियान उन्हें पूरे मुम्बई शहर की सैर करवाता है इस बीच कई मनोरंजक करामातें होती हैं।
फ़िल्म में एस.डी. बर्मन के यादगार संगीत और मज़रूह सुल्तानपुरी के सदाबहार बोलों से रचे गीत इसकी खूबसूरती और बढ़ा देते हैं। मनोरंजक उतार-चढ़ावों से भरे फ़िल्म के दूसरे हिस्से में एक दिलचस्प प्रसंग मुम्बई के एक फ़िल्म स्टूडियो के भीतर भी रचा गया है। इस मज़ेदार दृश्य में निर्देशक राज खोसला खुद एक फ़िल्म निर्देशक की हास्यपूर्ण मेहमान भूमिका में दिखाई देते हैं।
